I know dreamy talk is not an unusual subject on this board but I was hoping to stimulate some in-depth (or just passionate) discussion on how you decided who you wanted to live on your island? Did you make a list before NH came out? Or is your list constantly changing, ever-evolving?

What were the requirements? Do you care about personalities or species?

As a side question, I'm curious if anyone who has decided their dreamy list is finalized is ever planning on letting any move out eventually. Is your island a permanent residence or do you want villagers to come and go (maybe because you have more than 10 dreamies)!

i love so many villagers, i've been making and remaking a list of 10 i want to have on my island since way before nh even came out... i wish we could have more slots on our island for villagers. in general though, i think i want to keep anyone on my island until i receive their photo and then if they want to move out they can.

i have sooo many dreamies but i have amiibos for quite a lot of them so i cycle a few in and out every now and then ^-^
i currently have: raymond, reneigh, katt, judy, rosie, julian, stitches
then i have 3 other spots i use for cycling my other dreamies like apollo, whitney, axel, maddie etc ♡

i've always had stitches on my ac games, he is my fave childhood villager and i've loved katt and rosie for years and have recently got their amiibos, thanks to my sister, so i can finally get them on my game
i got julian randomly for the first time in new leaf and i instantly fell in love with him
and the second i saw judy, raymond and reneigh i knew i had to have them on my island they're all adorable ☆

I really like this process. Getting their photos seems like the perfect reason to let them move on. But I also like the idea of keeping a group through the first year so you can go through every holiday with them.

Unfortunately that doesn't exactly allow you to meet a lot of villagers.

The majority of my dreamies are ones from the first game I played; WIld World. I think it’s the nostalgic factor for me , so I doubt I’ll ever let Goldie move away nor Tank and Peewee once I find them (I’m enjoying the long term excitement of looking for them at the moment). Saying that , I do now and then find a new villager I really like who is added to my dreamies list- eg Ike and Boots, who I came across by chance and found adorable. I don’t think it has anything to do with personalities for me; I don’t have any snooty, uchi or smug on my dreamies list, just because I’ve never properly had an amazing connection with a villager with that personality. That’s not to say it might change someday!

Saying this, I do like variety on my island and so I plan on having at least 5 who I’m happy to move away so I can see new animals who might be newer to the game or who I’ve never met before. For example, after island hopping a lot the other day I eventually let fate take its chances and got landed with Julia taking over my plot- so I’ll just have to see how much I like her!

I guess it just happened. I'm very sentimental for Gaston and Savannah who have been my favorites since Animal Crossing on the Gamecube. I guess that happens when you've spent 20 years (on and off) through several games with certain characters. The same goes for some villagers in New Leaf who became very dear to me.

The design is most often what makes me interested in a villager but it is only through time and interaction that they can become dreamies.

I have two indispensable villagers and they should always be in ALL and ANY animal crossing towns / islands I have (Marshal and Maple) because of nostalgia. I have very extreme connections with them especially Marshal and I cannot play the game for long without him. The rest, I get the ones I like based on looks or personality or houses and see if I click with them. I try to not get villagers I’ve already previously had in other games again unless they bonded with me and I missed them a lot. So whoever I encounter first in the islands or campsite who’s intrigued me and I’ve never had before, I will choose them to stay in the island. Some I’ve grown to love so they’re staying now. Those I don’t get too close to can go as they please when they ask.

Nome of mine were hard requirements, really. I want one of each personality and no more than two, and I almost skipped the cranky, but luckily it worked out later.

Since I played New Leaf twice, I didn't want repeat villagers, but almost broke THAT rule with Genji. (Based on what I read in another thread, it's better not to let NH soil the memories though.)

Lastly I also didn't want two villagers of the same species except for the koalas, but after deciding against Genji I'll have two eagles as well.

On to the individual villagers:

Eugene: I picked him way before NH was even announced. My friend group on Discord basically treats him like the AC version of one friend's OC, who is the best friend of my OC who I'm going to create as a human villagers... whenever I get around to it.

Alice: Same reason but with my OC :) And she was just so freaking cute in Pocket Camp. Alice is love.

Raddle: Miles island villager I invited because I placed all three homes in one day and then found out they're going to be randomly filled. Cute design, and I wanted a frog anyway, so why not? Turned out I forgot how absolutely amazing lazy frogs are (I had Jeremiah in my first NL town and LOVED him) He'll stay forever. Kinda glad he has a tutorial house too.

Peanut: Caught my attention when she was camping in my NL town, met her on the first mystery island, felt like fate. I was okay with replacing her with a peppy I like more later, but there really isn't one. Except for Bunnie who falls under the no repeat rule.

Nan: I was tired and had to take someone, and she was reasonably cute. I don't think I ever fell in love with a villager this fast. Unfortunately this means no room for other great nirmals, but there's no way I'll ever get rid of my girl.

Bree: I was in the mood for island hopping and decided to take the first villager I didn't dislike. Same as with Peanut - there just aren't any snooties I like more, just one I alteady had in NL.

Fuchsia: I don't like most sisterly designs, the only ones I didn't have were Fuchsia and Pashmina. Fuchsia won because she's not a duplicate species and she makes a good third for the "character-based" group, and her house fits nicely into my village.

Raymond: Remember the OC I mentioned? She's an IT and security manager, and she needs employees. And his house just so happens to have the same exterior as Eugene's, AND they fit an unrelated design idea, so that was a no brainer really.

Avery: I do not like what they did to the crankies in this game. They aren't cranky. They're barely anything other that absurdly confused, which is why I almost skipped them. But I took a look at the list and realized Avery looked unusual enough to... Not really be a villager, but an island god. One who does not understand what these people are doing here all of a sudden, but he's trying to roll with it. (Octavian as an alien was a similar idea, but it didn't fit as well, and his exterior would have clashed since I originally wanted to keep the asian themed part for Genji.)

Sterling: Yeah... This one was hard. I just love Genji that much and it took a while (and a post telling me how much he was downgraded compatred to NL) to settle on the duplicate eagle. The idea came from a post on Gamefaqs stating how underrated he is because his design is so unique. I realized that he would be the perfect town guard for the town I'm planning. Sucks a little that he'll live close to other villagers, but the story potential is too good to pass up.

My dream villagers are so because of the relationships I had with them in the old games.
  1. Pate, she is and always will be my number 1. In the Gamecube Animal crossing, she put her house next to mine (or as close as you could get to it since your house was on that stone floor thing) and then proceeded to give me gifts multiple times a day. The villagers in the first game were so rude and mean but not Pate. She was consistently lovely.

  2. Moose. In CF he moved into my town, I saw him walking about and was like "who the heck is this weirdo." Quickly fell in love with him, there's something just so amusing to me about a tiny little mouse boasting about his bulging muscles. But what really made me warm to him is how absolutely hated he is by other players. Like c'mon, he's so funny and he's cute in his own, peculiar way. The more hate he gets, the more I like him as a result.

  3. Gaston, similar story as with Moose really, I find his moustache funny. I had him in WW after Chow moved out and warmed to him quickly. He had the mad scientist house and I had heaps of fun sending him all the Lovely furniture which he displayed in his house. :D

  4. Carmen. She's just so cute and her house in CF was adorable. In CF she seemed to be best friends with Moose and they used to talk about going shopping together. I can't believe Carmen doesn't have more fans because she's cute, not ugly-cute like Moose, just plain cute.

  5. Bitty. AHAHAHA I love Bitty, though I only recently realised how much I want her back again. I had her in the Gamecube game and she was so mean and rude, always talking about how ugly I was and how beautiful she was. Coming from a hippo, I found that hilarious.

  6. Filbert. I had him in CF, he's just the most adorable little sweety. I was distraught when he moved out and I ended up with Puck as a replacement.

I just chose ones I liked from previous games, or ones I looked at the design and thought I would like.

I tried to have as many new villagers as possible, and my final dreamy list is this:
  1. Tom (I had him in NL)
  2. Sylvanna
  3. Judy
  4. Sly
  5. Huck
  6. Tammi
  7. Chester
  8. Gonzo
  9. Diva (I had her in NL)
  10. Ankha (I had her in NL)
I had 2 "failed" dreamies: Flora and Winnie. Flora I got from a mystery island but ultimately decided she wasn't the best fit for my island, and Winnie who didn't pass the vibe check lmao she was kinda weird. So now I'm hoping third time's the charm and Tammi will be my permanent peppy lol

My dreamie list changes fairly regularly. I know that I want a mix of all the personality types, and had to keep that in consideration when trying to figure out who I wanted on my island. For example, I LOVE most of the normal villagers and would probably have a whole island of them if they didn't all have the same dialogue haha. So for now I'm not paying too much attention to species (probably gonna end up with four ostriches rip) but definitely personality. I then choose ones from each personality that I just like the look of and feel they'll fit my island well. :)

Pierce is one I've had in WW, City Folk, and NL, so he's a dreamie mostly for nostalgia's sake.

When I started the game I knew that I NEEDED Zucker... he's the villager I cared about the most back in NL.
I was hoping for Merengue, Lily, Olivia, and Katt - I was super lucky to get amiibo cards of both, Katt and Lily in some blind amiibo packs I ordered not long before the game came out.
I also got Sherb through a mystery island tour who became my dreamie pretty quickly and invited an oldie, Henry, who I really liked from NL.
I discovered my new dreamies, Peggy and Boyd as well - I had Peggy's amiibo card and decided to scan her in one day just for kicks.
I got Boyd on mystery island and never thought he'd grow on me so much.

I have a mental list of about 30 villagers I would really love to try, so I can never settle on a final list of 10! Mostly I just enjoy meeting new friends and letting them move out or asking them to stay based on how close we are whenever they ask to move. I do island hop whenever someone moves out, but I don't hunt for one specific "dreamy." I just keep going until I see someone who makes me go "Oh my goodness, it's _______!"

I strongly prefer having all personalities and a 50/50 gender split, but I will fudge that a little—I'm willing to have 6 of one gender, 4 of the other and up to two of one personality, with no more than one personality missing. If I see someone I truly adore on an island, I'll take them home even if it means unbalancing my town, unless I'm REALLY set on keeping two others of the same personality for a long time. As far as general preferences go, I like colorful villagers and villagers who don't have many human-esque features.

I honestly just went through the personalities and wrote down what villagers i liked the look of and then narrowed it down from there. I didn't have a set theme in mind, although I might start incorporating a theme more into my villagers, but i just picked who i liked out of all personalities. I picked at least one of each and then had an extra for 2 of the personalities in order to total to 10 villagers.
I currently have 2 lazies and 2 normals (i only have 2 normals because im holding one for someone but im probably gonna end up with 2 smugs down the line)
I don't really focus on species but i do love goat and deer and i have like 5 in total lol
Lopez, Pashmina, Diana, Bruce and Sherb

i just chose the ones that i like the most - theres many that i love and would love to have so i tried to narrow it down to the ones i couldn’t imagine being without ;;

Chrissy was my first "dreamie", meaning a villager I was actively searching for, and she's the reason why I joined the forums :) I really wanted her to go along with Francine who is my favorite! So I would say my dreamies are usually villagers that I randomly got at some point and fell in love with in previous games, that I want to get back — like Francine — but I also like random villagers; I got Raymond as a random fourth villager and Stitches was in my campsite and I love them so so much!

I discovered more recently in NH some villagers like Lily & Octavian, ones that I never had before and never ran into in previous games. I really need to see them in action/animated to decide if I like them or not. This game did such a good job giving all the characters more charm, with their interactions and everything, that all of them seem more or less likeable to me!

Other than that well it's all about the overall design and their little expressions... I try to have a balanced dream team in terms of personalities/genders (like 5 guys and 5 girls). If I could, I'd have a lot more Lazies, Smugs and Normals... but you can only have so many villagers :')

There are only a few sets of villagers that I dislike no matter what. Likely due to their design. Most however, I actually like. There are also only a smaller set that I really love.
