How did this villager come to my island?

So without warning a home plot was sold. Then when the villager moved in (it was Carrie btw) she told me she moved in from my girlfriend's island but my girl says she never told her to move onto my island. She just visits mine from time to time. So how the hey did Carrie wind up with me because I certainly never told her she can move in

If you visit someones island, their villagers in the void can end up on your island. Not sure if it works the other way around!

You can get random move instead from another player's void. So if that villager had moved out and your girlfriend visited your island afterwards, then you would have gotten the villager from her void.

Carrie was possibly voided from someone, so that’s why she moved in your town.

I did not know this. Well that sucks because I wasted nook miles tickets on trying to find a new villager and was confused why no one was on mystery islands. Come to find the plot was sold. And I did not want Carrie at all so now I gotta try and kick her out

I also learned this the hard way twice. My friend dumped Stinky and Queenie to my island without knowing about the "void" system. It really sucks. If you're doing trades a lot like I do, you only have a day to look for another villager by island hopping.
