How aware are villagers?

I kind of thought they were just mindless robots moving around my town. A couple of day ago a villager commented on how I was burying bells in the ground. Today a villager talked about how somebody who I invited to my town took all of my seashells, which actually happened.

What other stuff will they comment on?

Have they ever commented on anything like this to you?

I've gotten a bunch of comments about what I'm wearing, lol. They also spread rumors about you based on how you play the game (if you rarely spend bells = 'Bell Pincher').

I always found it kind of meta how they will comment on how there are rumours about me being a time traveler. I mean... I am, but how do they know?

Every time I had a visitor in my town in the past, they would always comment about that person who visited me. And they would always call me a pro listener because I’m always doing requests and Bell pincher because I’m barely spending bells in the game now.
