Hokko Life (Animal Crossing Clone for Steam)

I do feel bad for him, but other than gardening and furniture customization, he hasn't done anything to give it its own charm. Temtem is a rip off of Pokemon, but the battle mechanics are different, it has its own designs, and it has the gimmick of being an MMO.

However, Hokko Life isn't using any unique animals or theme. The designs for the characters are generic at best and it looks so much like Animal Crossing. It's lacking its own unique flavor to set it apart. The train looks a lot like the train from the original game. The house interiors look identical. Much of the furniture (like plants) are identical. The shells in the beach, sand texture, fish shadows, the flower happy VFX on the villagers... It all looks waaaay too much like Animal Crossing.

He needs to make it stand out. I'm all for an Animal Crossing-style game on PC, but if you're going to do it, you need to set it apart.

I agree with your criticisms for the most part. I think a lot of people are jumping to conclusions about this game without realizing that it doesn't even have a release date yet (except the year, 2020). A lot of people are used to Animal Crossing where you basically get what you pay for once the game is released. Many indie developers continue to push content to their games for years after the game launch, so I think the game has potential to draw a strong community even post-launch.

it very obviously takes a lot of inspiration from animal crossing, and i think that's okay!! i don't think games such as this or temtem can truly be called rip-offs; i mean temtem is a bit different because it really did differentiate itself from its inspiration but both games are still very different from their muses. the animals in hokko life seem to be more realistic looking than the animals in animal crossing, the way it handles its furniture and housing is very different too (i think the trailer showed the player decorating a "villager's" house!), the animals actually wear pants, and there's farming!! i don't think many creative things are truly original anymore, and that's honestly not a bad thing. sometimes you love an idea so much you tweak it your own specifications until its very different from the source material, and i feel like that is what happened with hokko life (though maybe not as different, but that is still okay!). it is very obviously not going to do as well as animal crossing because of people's biases, but that just gives the game time to grow into something that can truly be called its own.

i really wish people didn't hate on it because of their loyalty to animal crossing; it doesn't really bode well for future games imo. i'm also a bit sad that its the main motivator for people to dislike and comment negative things about the game. though i'm a bit sad to see all these criticisms, i'm excited to see where this game goes, and i wonder what the creator will do with their current feedback. (i didn't really know where to put this but i actually really like the artstyle? i can see why some may not, like some of the colors kind of throw me off, but it has grown on me since reviewing the trailer).
