So while I was out today stopped in the gamestop and they had stock on switches again. So since I could buy at the regular prices decided to order a switch lite and grab another copy of animal crossing so could do a second island. With the help of my main island I believe I can get to KK real quick, then as soon as I can get the terraforming options I am gonna level the island. I will keep one small section where will have 1 of each tree type for fruits and resource options for beginners to grab. Otherwise flat land all over for the main purpose, an item/diy dump. a place for anyone who just wants to get rid of items for storage space and diys for island ratings rather than nooks. I would open up the island at set times wednesdays and thursdays and leave it set aside while i play on my main switch and anyone could come to ditch stuff or search through what has been dumped for what u might need.

main purposes i am going for
-free diy exchange
-free item exchange
-free fruit for beginners
-southern island hunting ground
-villager holder for those restarting or any other reason their islander is leaving and they want them back
-give me ideas and i'll add them

So the help I need from you guys is any ideas on how I can work towards and achieve this idea. The biggest thing I need to figure out is traffic to and from the island, dont want to exclude anybody but is a good idea to limit how many come at a time so people can actually do stuff without every minute sitting through the loading screen of someone coming or going, ideas? would luv to hear them

I would definitely use the queue system in this forum to manage the foot traffic.

Based from my prior experience, three is the best number of visitors. I had a similar question like this before. You can refer to my thread here.

Based from the activities that you're planning to run, you don't expect visitors to leave immediately. You may want to consider inviting more.

Could you have time slots in which certain people come and leave at a certain time to help with the traffic?

this would be a good idea, unfortunately only works for people dropping stuff off. those who are searching through it or hunting wont know how long they will take

will check that out, right now i'm thinking 4-5 at a time, possibly let a few extra when they are here if all they are doing is dropping stuff off then leaving

I really, really like your idea! But I think it comes with a snatch:

Once upon a time, I was in a Facebook group where you can give things you don't use anymore away for free. Some core users of this group came up with the idea of a chain-letter type box of small home decoration/kitchen things. In the beginning, it worked: The admin filled a box with small interesting items, the next person picked it up, took an item and left another in it's place. Because they were a core group, these users mostly kept putting other, real, interesting, useful items in the box. After a while though, the core group lost interest (most of them already had something from the box or didn't have any other good things to put in it) and newer users weren't as committed to putting in interesting/useful items. So the group ended up with a box full of Tupperware without matching lids, and the box became useless and impossible to pass on to a next person.

What I'm trying to say is: The idea of a dump island sounds nice, but try and make sure that the things that are dropped off aren't the 999th 'simple workbench DIY' or 'garbage can' and that there's actually a variety of stuff for people to pick up. For that reason only, try to find another word to use than 'dump'. To me it sounds more like you want an island to be used for exchanges, as a charity store, than an actual dump.

You need items that people are actually looking for to get people to visit your island. And you need people that want to give away a variety of items freely, which is easier to achieve if they know your island as a place where they profited from someone else's generosity. If anyone can come and ditch stuff, you might end up with a pile of junk, a lot of duplicates, and one or two interesting items. And a person visiting might be easily turned off if they have to wade through a pile of uninteresting stuff, encountering the same stuff over and over.

So, keep an eye on your island and perhaps sort through the stuff there yourself every once in a while, getting rid of 9 of the things when there's 10 of them on your island. You said you didn't want to exclude anyone, but if you're doing a separate time for dropping off and picking up, ask the people that are planning on dropping things off what they'll be dropping off: if something is mentioned a lot, let these people know that you appreciate their generosity but that you're really looking for a bigger variety in things. It will probably really help your island become an interesting place in the long run.

And like others said, use the queuing system to allow visitors to come/go. There's not really a way to avoid people having their visits interrupted if you accept more than 1 visitor at a time, especially if visits are short there will be a lot of coming and going if you immediately allow the next person access. I recommend allowing access in batches: Give the code to however many people you want (3 is nice, but 4-5 can definitely work if you do batches), and only invite the next people when the previous batch is (almost?) gone. You might want to let people know that they can't stay indefinitely as well, and request them to leave after whatever you find a reasonable time :)

I like the idea of if i see several copies there for an extended period of time, then to clean it up a bit, is a good signifier. Because one of the reasons I wanted to do this is you really can't tell easily what is trash, I can't count the number of times i sold off my trash diys to nooks, only to see them on someones diy wishlist the next day.

yeah might do a time delay after someone leaves before i give the code to the next person, stagger it so have at least a few minutes of no interruptions for people
