Have you ever lied about your age online in New Leaf for a reason or just not to tell?[close thread]

Ive never lied about my age on AC, even when I was 12 playing the current version of animal crossing, I always found it to be dishonest to do so and would feel guilty if I did do it (lying about being older).

Im currently 21 years old. I play with some younger kids, around 7-13 sometimes, but that is because I babysit these specific kids daily, am incredibly close to the parents/kids... the kids and parents consider themselves my siblings and family. I play with them when the parents or the kids ask me to, and when Im free, so they can leave their parents be when their own friends arent online to play with them [ especially now during quarantine ] ^^”

@Mr_Persona please, I ask that you do not do this. As I mentioned before, I babysit and care for kids ranging in between these ages and would feel very off-put and disturbed to know theyd be playing with a stranger whos much much older than them, I understand your intentions arent of malice, but it crosses a line for me [[ and for the parents ]] and for others because of the current world we live in. Bell tree forums is such a wonderful community, full of people of all ages who want to play the same game ^^ There are many like me who play the game for the childhood nostalgia it brings, where we can let go for a moment of the strong adult facade. I mean this all in the nicest way possible.

I don't think I've ever lied about my age here or anywhere else. I'm 31 years old, shocking since I never seemed to act (or even look) my age, I do come off as immature a lot and since english is my second language there are barriers for me when it comes to expressing myself.
Some people feel ashamed of being "too old" to hang out in a place that is supposedly intended for the younger folk and it is very understandable because I was shamed for it numerous times on different sites with kids making comments like "oh, I thought you were a teenager" or "I thought you wear 12, grow up" making me feel quite limited and cautious about how I represent myself in these places, I can't be as carefree I guess, like I feel like I shouldn't participate in certain activities so people wouldn't be weirded out? It's my insecurities I guess?
I..admit that I actually don't feel as old as my years and I act immature because that's really me, and, I believe I belong here just as anyone else but I try as well not to appear as vulnerable and prone to get called out for how I act as before. I'm so glad I stayed true to myself and honest and transparent with my motives and actions here even if people looked down on me, I'm not going artificial to fit in certain standards.

I don't think you should tell minors that you're a minor when you're not... as others said, it's really creepy and invasive. Give kids the option to consent to spent their time with an adult online, many of them wouldn't be comfortable with that. Personally I don't really care about people knowing these kinds of details about me, but I really don't feel like sharing them either. I'm a mature player and I can usually tell who is as well. To be honest I'm at the age where I try not to engage with minors online anymore, I think they deserve their own space without adults.

And your whole post is much worse when it's about actual kids and not just teenagers. You really shouldn't play games with them online unless you have the consent of their parents. I can understand a mentor/mentee role for a multiplayer game, but the parents need to know about this.

Trust me you're not the only one, my sister is the same way. But see don't feel left out like I do, just don't force yourself to fit in because most people will just want to be who they are.

Ok ok you shouldn't go too harsh there. I didn't even say how old I was during that time I made friends with those kids. I was a kid too during that time. I don't even care about making new friends now days on AC when I'm above 18.

hi!
ummm as someone whos a minor, this is incredibly creepy and uncomfortable. right now im at an age where 18 is okay and fine to be friends with, as irl i have friends that age, but if i were younger and i found out my friend was that much older than me? thats really unsettling. im saying this out of experience and ik my experiences arent exactly like everyone elses, but does it not come across as potentially creepy or .. idk, just not right to you? you're 18, im sure you can comprehend how weird it is to hear an 18 year old pretending to be 14 or younger just to be with younger kids.
theres plenty of people your age who are nice! if someone says that youre too old to be friends with them, thats not a valid reason to blatantly lie about your age. thats not respecting their and possibly others' boundaries and wishes. i don't mean to attack you but i just think that this is a really uncomfortable thread to see.
Well when I made friends with those kids, I was like 14 or 13 during that time when it was the old AC games and then we played ACNL and I only knew one of them said they were 12 and the others said 10, 11, and one said 16. But then he told the truth that he wasn't and I was surprised that he was only 10 and I decided to leave him. The others said that they lied but they never told me the real age. So all I know is that I must have been playing with older people that time. I don't think they were all kids around my age.

It's not less creepy just because it was a couple of years ago, you know. As an adult your brain is developed enough to know better. The problem isn't the amount of age difference, it's that adults shouldn't become online friends with teenagers without telling them they're adults (and don't interact with strange kids at all). That's just completely inappropiate.

Nope, I have never lied or told about my age when I used to be online a lot in NL during 2017 and I feel that this topic is really sensitive.

Trust me all you see online on ACNL are strange people...like really weird ones online in public. I would just turn off the chat on their mayor and I would keep it that way, unless they have questions about the game.

Yes I lied once so I can go to this persons' town very long time ago. He had a silly rule, it went like this "Only people who are 18 can visit my town because I hate chrildren". I was pretty shocked that he used the word hate and I knew he wouldn't let me visit even I was just 17 at that time!

Also the only creepy part is I think you must have been hanging out with older people during that time and didn't realized that was the truth. I don't undeerstand why everyone is over thinking about this because you were just trying to make those kids feel better so why is everyone here is being a bit too harsh? I know the truth that you did it to help the stranger kids out because remember I was there.

Hey Mr. Persona I think you should close the thread now before your feelings get hurt more. I don't think everyone is understanding what you're trying to say.:(

Friendships are built on trust, you shouldnt lie about your age just to befriend someone. My parents dont allow my brother to hang with people who are older than him and i am sure the parents of some of these kids feel the same way so dont do this! I am sure you are a kind person and mean no harm. You will find plenty of nice people here who are around your age!
My brother is 23 and his only friend is a 15 year old kid. As soon as my parents found out, the kid was not allowed at our house. It's just messed up. The age difference might not matter from a 35 year old and a 43 year old but when you're growing up, even 4 years is a big difference.

Why would he make friends with a 15 year old?
If Mr. Persona saw this right now I bet she will throw up xD

Yeeeeap. Tell me about it lol. We were all just like... why... why can't you make friends your own age? That's almost like 10 year gap.
