Have you ever gotten villagers you didn't know were popular?

not in new horizons but back in new leaf, i had ankha randomly move in at one point back when the game was fairly new for NA and i voided her when she moved out because i didn’t know how popular she was >_<
 
Only in New Leaf, Marshal, Diana and Chrissy. And Beau and Erik, noth of whom I just let go because I didn't really care for them. I guess I had some idea that Dom was popular when I found him while island hopping. I'm really glad I invited him, he makes the best faces.
 
Marshal was my second campsite visitor after the mandatory one. He didn't really appeal to me, but I decided to look him up and was surprised to find how hugely popular he was, haha. I reconsidered, but I didn't end up moving him in.

I invited Beau and Sherb from mystery islands before I knew they were popular, I just knew Sherb was new.
 
Not that she's super popular, but I got Reneigh as a starter villager without realizing she was new and didn't have an amiibo. Probably would have voided her, but now I might see if anyone wants to take her when she decides to move out.
 
In New Leaf I got Lolly as a Streetpass villager. Back then I had almost zero contact with the AC community so I had no idea she was so popular. She was one of my favorites because she reminded me of my cat.

Now that I'm part of the AC community, I know who the most popular villagers are, so this won't be happening in New Horizons.
 
I already knew enough about villager popularity from hanging around here during NL that when I saw Marina on one of my first mystery islands, I thought "great, that's how I'm gonna pay off my house loan."

I now know Marina is too easy to get to be worth selling. One of my friends got Audie as her starter and ofc I was the one to tell her how popular Audie was lol
 
I didn't even know there were 'tier lists' until I'd filled my island.

Some of my villagers seem to be quite popular, such as Fauna and Dom, whereas others are less so, such as Rolf and Astrid. They're all awesome to me though, and that's all that matters!

I did have Marshal, but we sold him on here as neither me nor my son really warmed to him. I only realised he was quite popular in the week or so before I sold him, as I started to watch the new neighbour network to see how it all works. I was just happy to let him go to someone who clearly really wanted him, and accepted the first offer we got.

I honestly can't pinpoint what makes a villager 'popular' - to me, Rolf seeemd an obvious hit; I mean, he's a white tiger! And I still can't work out why Fauna would be significantly more sought after than Midge. If I'd come across Raymond, who seems to get mentioned more than any other villager, I'd have left him on a mystery island and kept looking.

Meh, I guess people like what they like.
 
In NL I got Julian and thought he was really neat. DID NOT realize that he was as popular as he was, and was super bummed when I found out people would've totally paid me to take him when he moved out :p I have him in this game, too, partially because he's awesome and partially for the memories! Whenever he moves on I'll see if anyone wants to buy/trade for him~

I also didn't realize Dobie is pretty popular until coming on here. I mean, I don't see a ton of people gushing over him like Raymond or anything, but he seems to have a solid fanbase. And I'm glad, since he's one of my favorites! I have his Amiibo and have had him in my game ever since getting it 🥰

marina is easy to get because mystery islands roll for species first and there are only 3 octopi

Ah... well, I haven't gotten her yet, but I've seen Zucker A LOT, so maybe that explains why?

Never taken him, though, he's not my favorite and for a long time I wasn't looking for a lazy.
 
Whitney, but that was long ago when I started my first ever new leaf town. I didn’t know she was loved by many and definitely didn’t know she was in a movie.

I found her on a mystery island, got her to mine cause i liked her had no idea she was popular.

Is there a list somewhere? cause I dont even know if i have popular ones or not :P
 
I had the same thing with Diana... I didn't know she was as popular and coveted as she is. I was actually looking for Whitney when I found her and decided to invite her because I thought she was cute and she reminded me of snow! Another one was Sherb who I found in a Mystery Island tour, but finding out he was popular didn't take that long for me to realize lol
 
Not in NH but Coco was my starter in NL and I didnt know she was popular cuz I had never played animal crossing before.
 
Thats the story with Stitches, Judy and Marshal for me, I never knew they were popular and just took them cause I liked how they look.
Stitches was a starter villager for me so I had to let the one I got go cause his house interior sucked.
Luckily with Judy and Marshal I got them with their real interiors.
 
On June 14, 2013 my main ACNL town started with Lolly. I stayed away from all forums to avoid spoilers and didn't know there was a popular list. Started a 2nd town 2 months later and Marshall moved in. At the time the town was a spare one and he moved out on his own. I've seen the popular list and most villagers that live in my towns/islands are mid to bottom tier.
