Recently I've been seeing some people make islands inspired by the original animal crossing game, and I was wondering if anyone created one inspired by new leaf?

You could recreate the train station and the train tracks, and put your shops and museum up on the cliffs in the far back of the island to recreate the shopping center. If you really wanted it to be like new leaf, I imagine you could build cliffs over your entire island (excluding resident services, of course) and have slopes leading down to the beaches!

Those are some neat ideas! It would be nice if we could move the plaza. Not sure if it counts, but one of the first things I did with terraforming was making a back alley through the island by destroying the cliffs at the back, effectively making a one-ply path to shortcut from one side of the island to the other. I laid down a train track pattern there to hint a little at new leaf's train tracks. Not to go too off topic, but it also reminds me of the times me + my siblings explored out-of-use train tracks as kids.
Here's an old photo I found showing a bit of the track! (it's still here to this day & i'm thinking about designing a train station-esque area somewhere along the track)

Would love to see other people's take on either small or big new leaf references!

One of my ideas for my island is to make the shopping district in the back of my island. I think it would be really fun to re-create it and I would love the nostalgia of it! My only issue with that would be I would miss out on other opportunities to make more specialized area(s) for the shopping buildings though.

It's a cool thought. It might be a little hard to pull off PWPs because of how many don't have a NH equivalent (the wisteria trellis and windmill come to mind), but I could see it. Like you could make a player house the Roost, another one the Lost and Found, have a pothole in some notable location and then make Resetti's lair in a basement. Another house could be Re-Tail.

Oh, but if you really wanted to be hardcore, you can't use transparent patterns (other than maybe The Path to recreate natural grass wear), you can't wear clothes that don't take the shape of NL clothing, you can't have windflowers, mums, hyacinths or camellia bushes, you can't have a string of more than 15 bushes in a line...

These are pretty cool ideas! As for myself, I have a little area near resident services that is stone covered, with a tree in the middle. It's also surrounded by benches, and it symbolizes the plaza in NL. :)

I designed my island map to look like a throwback mix of older games: 3 Tiers from the original Animal Crossing, Scattered villager homes, the single winding river, and a few small ponds here and there - even one next to the shop. I like using a good amount of shrubs and trees, and iron garden benches, street lamps, drinking fountains, a regular fountain and a lighthouse give a nice New Leaf feel. I even use stone bridges and loads of natural inclines for a City folk appeal.

Having said that, the big parts missing in my mind to make things more like New Leaf are the various public works projects. I really miss the Flower Arch, Flower Clock, Wisteria Trellis, Topiaries, and the Bus Stop in particular. Thus, I have to suffice with placing various rocks, bamboo stuff, flower furniture and filtering through the other 1000+ options I could put outdoors. Despite that, it's incredibly fun to do in terms of a minimalistic town!

I would like to do my based off of ACCF shopping center. It's such a beautiful look in ACCF, l loved how they made it look rich and made it look part of a city like how it's supposed too. So l will be very happy try to do that in NH if possible.

I was initially going to base my second island directly off of my NL town, but decided against it because my Town Hall was top-right corner and you can't move Resident Services, nor are there any island layouts that put Resident Services that far up and out of the way 😕
Instead, I based the layout off of my first-ever town from ACGC when I was six, which I still maintain to this day.
(..with a corner substituted to reflect my mayor's area in New Leaf, in lieu of the post office and residence acres. No way I'm going to make three empty, unused houses. This mimicry would've been a lot of wasted space imo)
Though my progress has come to a screeching halt because the island became a massive dumping ground for extra DIY cards from multiple people, way back in June 😭
I've been trying loosen the load before I can continue...then it'll be much closer to having some semblance of ship-shape.
(I know that didn't really line up 100 percent with the NL theme, sorry. Double sorry about the weird Blathers-ing 😅)

I kinda tried to recreate the map layout I had in New Leaf, however I ended up dumping this idea since it didn't work so well (space was the main issue). But I love the ideas mentioned in this thread!

I think it would be really cool to see an island based off of city folk or new leaf, but that's mostly cause I'm a sucker for islands with little cities in them. Given how much customization is possible in the game I feel like it would be a waste to recreate a game like wild world or the lower half of new leaf since that would make it mostly grass, but that's just my personal take on it 😊

People have been making towns based off the original game? I've had the plan to do that to my island, but haven't seen any islands so far.
Mayor Mori on youtube has been working on one, and WilbosWorld has been recreating it as well!

That is so cool! Do you have a dream address? I also miss some of the public work projects and really want the Bus Stop on my island.

That is so adorable! And practical, I always find myself trying to walk behind my island and getting stuck at one place or another 😂

Ah that is adorable! I definitely miss the town plaza and tree from new leaf.

I thought about doing this. It would probably simplify island designing.

Unfortunately, I don't have one updated, as I'm still decorating my island to see fit. It might take a few weeks before I do show my dream, which I'll post in my signature one I'm done.

That said, I do have a roughly finished map of my layout:
