I've never owned a Harvest Moon game before, so I'm completely new to the series. I've taken a look at some videos and reviews etc and I've decided to give one of them a try on the 3DS. However, I note that there are two 3DS versions, 'A New Beginning' and 'A Tale of Two Towns'. This is where you guys come in. Which do you believe is: A) the better game and/or B) a more advisable purchace for a beginner. Please give a brief reason behind your answer so that I can eventually weigh up any feedback that I do get!

Ah, good thread, I recently bought A Tale of Two Towns but can't get into it to be honest, which is a shame as the game has good graphics, good storyline, lots to do, there's just something missing... I picked the animal farm and have a chicken and a cow as well as my horse, they're so sweet when you pet them :)

A New Beginning is out later this year for EU so I'd like to see how others that have it are finding it!

My experience with ToTT has been very good overall; it certainly took a while to get into but I found it very charming and the more homely layout and readiness of the farms was, to me, preferable to those in all other HM games I have played (which is most of them). I didn't find it any more difficult to get into the actual playing methods of than the others. The choice between the two towns and thus farm types is a very interesting element but isn't necessarily what I'd advise for a first foray into the series; although whichever farm you end up on permits a certain amount of dabbling in its respective "opposite" (i.e., growing a relatively limited number of crops in Bluebell on the ranching-based farm, or having a small number of animals in Konohana despite the town being crop-focused) and you can still move if you wish (once a season, I believe?) I think you would get a better sense of the kind of mixture HM as a series has to offer from ANB. Unfortunately, though, because ANB hasn't come out here just yet, I can't comment on it with real certainty. That said from what I have heard from friends who have played both what stands out most is that they feel it is better in terms of the much awaited character customisation.

Thank you very much, both of you, for your insights. I didn't actually know that ANB hadn't been released yet in the UK, so thanks for that information.

Sounds to me like both are very good installments, but as an introduction into/taste of the series, it would be sensible to go with ANB.

Great, think I'll get ANB when it comes out, I was disappointed with TOTT after I'd read so many good things about HM as a series.

I have played both games on the 3DS and I strongly suggest that you buy ToTT for the DS as opposed to the 3DS because the game was originally made for the DS. As a result, the 3DS version has several glitches despite the better graphics. When I first purchased the game, it would freeze right before the end of the day and cause me to lose all my progress. When I bought the game for the DS, however, my experience was much better. Despite the slightly less advanced graphics, I enjoyed the game a lot more due to the lack of glitches.
However, regardless of that whole escapade with ToTT, I loved ANB the most of the two titles. The graphics were excellent, the storyline was adorable, and I found the overall farming experience to be a lot more fluid in that installment. Plus it reminded me of NL in the way that you could customize your town's appearance.
Although both games were excellent, I would recommend ANB because of its customization options. I'm a big fan of customization in gaming.

I've played both, and I prefer ANB. ToTT is sort of cumbersome if you end up running both farms (living on one and still raising crops on the other, for example).

Thanks a ton guys. Seems to be unanimous support for ANB then. I'll be eagerly awaiting its release! :)

Is there an official release date in the UK? I couldn't find one on the internet.

According to this, "Nintendo 3DS game Harvest Moon: A New Beginning launches in Europe during the third quarter of 2013.
It'll arrive on these shores courtesy of publisher Marvelous AQL Europe and distributor Zen United. It was released in Japan in February 2012 and in the US in October 2012."

Which does indeed add up from the last I heard, which was that Rising Star would not be taking on this one and it would be Zen United instead. I have also seen several online stores (including Game) with the date listed as 30th of August. Fingers crossed; it looks like we're finally getting it quite soon! Looks like I'll need to put down another preorder with my birthday money after all these months of having given up hope for release. :P

A New Beginning would be your best bet.

Or just wait for Stardew Valley to be released. It's not an official Harvest Moon game, but it's inspired by it.

Amazon has a "date" of August 30th too, but they tend not to put a date on items unless they have heard from the suppliers. I haven't seen any official communication, but to be perfectly honest I haven't been looking for one
