Nintendo spilled the beans about Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer's file size in Japan. If you want to download it, you'll need to have at least 4,038 blocks (504.75MB) of free space, which is about 1/4 of a 2GB SD Card, and around 1/8 of 4GB.

So yeah, if you decide to go on the download route, the game shouldn't take too much space on your SD Card, especially for those with 16GB or 32GB SD Card handy.
