So, I was talking to my husband about hacking my 3DS so I can hack my town, and move some houses and things around, and he says I shouldn't do it. Mostly because he wouldn't want me to mess up my save file or my whole system. Those of you with hacked 3DS and hacked towns, what are some advantages and disadvantages of doing this?

Hacking 3DS to hack town?

I don't haave any hacked towns, but my advice is just to be VERY precautionary about anything you do. As long as you keep track of what you're doing, you should be alright. Also, I think you can back up your town somehow, so do that first.

I agree with licorice, if youre scared just make sure you follow these rules while editing your town and you should be fine. 
About the advantages,
*you can create or move a building anywhere (this includes re-tail, police station, PWPs, town tree, houses, katrinas tent, franklins table, etc)
*Unlock all pwp
*regrow all your grass/ get rid of all your grass
*change players name, town name, character appereance, grass type, town map, native fruit...
And if youre interested in mods you can do stuff like this

there must be two waterfalls (wall and sea),
there must be a town plaza acre,
there must be two slopes: you can move them carefully using the acre editor
do not do weird things with the acre editor: try to keep a valid structure in the acre editor
keep at least two rocks: move them using the map editor if you need it (use right click to 'copy' the rock, place it anywhere then delete the original one)
keep enough free space for buildings in the town plaza acre: the game will freeze whenever special visitors (Redd, Gracie, Katrina...) try to put their tents there
be careful when moving any building: you can adjust building placements with the editor, but don't do weird things like placing houses in the water

Make frequent backups is my advice to you. And don't do anything too messed up like put houses in the water. I mean, it'll work, but you run the risk of corrupting your save that way.
There's also things you will have to do in-game regardless, making building a hacked town still challenging. Keep that in mind. ^^;
