Gyroid Fragment; How?

So, I had 5 Gyroid fragments at one point so I buried them all and then during the next day I was able to dig 5 Gyroids up, I even got Bubbloid! I did as Kapp'n said. At least I think he gave the tutorial..
Now when I bury a fragments no smoke appears and the Gyroid fragment is still burried the next day.

My question is, am I missing a step? How do I make the Gyroid grow?? ​
