In my secondary town, I'm planning on making entirely natural dirt paths. Does anyone have tips or know how to make grass deterioration occur more quickly? I've been running around my town like an idiot and I'm not seeing any visible effects.

Run around with shoes on rather than no shoes.
Run in the same spots, and make characters and delete their houses so there will be a giant dirt patch where they put their house. That helps a lot with what you're going for.
Try to run on a path, maybe place patterns down and run over them with like I said, shoes on.

run over the snar are multiple times a day
have no flowers where you want the dirt

ive also heard that running on an area, saving and quitting and then opening the game again and running over the same area makes the process faster

I think something you should note is that when it's winter, the grass deterioration will dissapear under the snow. Which means that when it comes to winter time and afterwards, you'll no longer have these dirt paths, so you might need to preserve them somehow!
I found that when I had paths down it made it easier for grass deterioration (even though it wasn't intended) because I would run over the paths often, so that might help a bit :)

Saving and quitting makes the process a lot faster. My grass is deteriorating very quickly, because I've been saving and quitting a lot recently. Like I have grass wear trails everywhere now... Even in spots I only run over maybe three or four times a day.

^ Saving and quitting makes the process bearable but just know that it's a lot of work to maintain the degraded grass paths.
All of your hard work goes away if you don't continuously run and use your paths on a daily basis. Especially after the winter.

Creating and then demolishing public works projects also leaves large patches.

Does the snow really help renew your grass? I'm really happy if that's the case!

Actually, when it's winter I believe the grass deteriorates faster, mimicking real life when grass doesn't really grow in winter. It's in the spring and especially when it rains that the grass revives itself.

I've always only had grass paths and I've never had them covered in snow.

It seems the snow can bring back grass and take it back lol case my dirt is shrinking into white quickly i guesss so...

Run over the area multiple times, and perhaps put flowers to line the path or something
Also creating and removing pwp's will create dirt paths but this'll take quite some time, TT'ing (or waiting) and lots of IGB

Grass deterioration really stresses me out so I'll even sometimes tt ahead a few weeks when I refuse to let someone move out. A little bit of a desperate measure though

Here's a great guide!

I'm also going for natural paths, so that's a great thing to have up when doing grass deterioration.
