Good starter Pokemon game

X/Y for me, was an easy game to play through so it would be perfect if you want an easier run through. Plus, since it's the newest Pokemon game, there are online players EVERYWHERE. The bad part about it is that once you beat it, you get one mini quest at the end and then that's it. I got bored of it once I beat it. It really wasn't my favourite Pokemon game. I think it honestly was my least favourite of them all so far. ^^'

My personal favourites of the Pokemon series is gen 3, Pokemon Sapphire and Ruby. However, those games are pretty old (Gameboy Advance). I'd also recommend gen 4, Diamond, Pearl and Platinum. They have nice graphics and loads of stuff to do once you beat the game. I haven't played gen 2 yet but I heard from several people that Heartgold and Soulsilver were great games as well.

I recommend Emerald. My first pok?mon game and by far by favorite. I still randomly get the music stuck in my head. Plus, It's an older game so it should be pretty cheap.

i would recommend the black/white games. one of my favorite regions, not too easy like x/y was and not too difficult either. unova's a beautiful region and there's so many towns and places to explore, not to mention the pokemon are amazing imo.

I only don't recommend X/Y because the transition to 3D graphics from 2D graphics was so totally shocking and different that, honestly, playing in 2D now is very strange.
The great thing about Pokemon is that, even though the basic gameplay and main objective is always the same (catch 'em all, become a League Champion, etc.), the tone of the game changes with every incarnation due to the setting and the characters around you. They all have something different to offer.
If you want a (super G-rated) gritty urban experience, you should play Pokemon Black/White. B/W brings up almost unanswerable morality questions about battling Pokemon for fun. Pokemon X/Y is ultra simplistic, but has an interesting background story and extras for completionists. It's the most 'guided tour' version of the Pokemons that I've played, but that doesn't make it any worse than the others. Pokemon Blue/Red/Yellow are very obviously the first games in the series, and though this is almost impossible now, lol, they were probably the best versions for playing with friends. Pokemon Gold/Silver are the longest and largest games, and they have a more Asia-centric atmosphere than previous or post games. They have very interesting legendaries and lore. Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald are very sea-based, so if you don't like Water-type Pokemon or high-seas adventure games this might not be the game for you, lol. It's still extremely fun, has awesome trumpet music and has more hidden areas than any other Pokemon game I've played. You should definitely try it out! And then there's Pokemon D/P. There are a lot of legendaries to catch, and if you like Pokemon contests, you should own this one and play through at least four gyms.

So there was a longer than necessary comment about the games; it really comes down to personal preference; for your first game I'd definitely pick a 2D one for a system that you already have, and R/S/E are my favourites, so there's my personal recommendation.

I got pokemon X as my first pokemon game last month. It is very easy to get used to and is also a lot of fun!
I'm not very great with knowing which pokemon are good and which aren't and who is who but I know a lot.
Or you could just wait until Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby come out as they seem a lot similar to X/Y and you probably won't be confused if you start there.

Personally, I would buy X and Y as your first game. It's the game that's simplified many of the in-depth mechanics of Pok?mon used in competitive battling should you want to try that, plus it has a diverse selection of Pok?mon in either game that you can work around. Of course, you could also wait until November and get Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, but I'd advise getting into the series earlier than that.

Probably just always go with the newest.

I started with SoulSilver a few years ago but I have no idea if that's a good place to start for others, because it's kind of "outdated" I guess. No spiffy 3D graphics or new mechanics or anything. (But it does let one of your Pokemon follow you outside their Pokeball, so that's pretty notable. :3) And the DS wifi service was cancelled, so no online battling or trading.

So yeah, X/Y.

I guess I would start with XY because it's the newest but it's quite different from the older games so I would suggest also picking up Platinum or Black/White to really get a feel for the series. Platinum came out in 2007 or 8 so you can probably find it cheap.

i think, if you really want to get into Pokemon, you should start with firered or leafgreen then work your way up to X/Y by getting soulsilver / heartgold, then ruby/sapphire/emerald, then pearl or diamond, then black or white, then black2 / white2 and THEN X/Y

but of course if you don't wanna spend that much and you just kinda want to get into it and not take as much time, then go for X/Y

I would personally go for the Gameboy games(Firered, Leafgreen, Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire) or gen 4 games for the original DS(Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, Soulsilver)

I agree. I think they would be hard to find for a decent amount of money, though.
I mean, most of the games aren't like the 3DS one yet, and I would probably just start with the older ones.
