So I just finished up a trade with someone (on instagram, not here) and I ended the session via the minus button. Afterward they gave me a friendly warning not to do that, as it can cause glitches.
Now I understand why people ask others to leave via the airport during trades. But what I still don’t know is, what kind of glitches does it cause? Should I be looking out for any signs? Does it only glitch the host, or the visitors too? Can it happen if I leave another town via the minus button?

I don’t want to accidentally glitch my town, or anyone else’s :’)

Gosh I hope this isn't true. I've never heard of such a thing. I always assumed it was fine considering it's a feature that we have the option of using. I ended a session just that way today.

I can't imagine it's a lasting glitch, if at all. I do it from time to time, and nothing happens.

it's not really a glitch per se, but if someone tries to leave with the minus button it's on a timer, so if another player on the island doesn't close their windows in time it'll time out. it'll let you leave, but it'll roll back everyone to the last autosave..
i've had that happen for me when i hosted my island for a diy and it caused the villager to stop crafting, so it is definitely safer to leave via the airport.

if there's any other actual glitch caused by this, then i haven't heard of it!

The only glitch I can possibly think of that would be caused by this is the one where the inventory of a player throwing fish bait is destroyed because someone left (or joined) the island at the same time they threw the fish bait (i.e. as the animation is playing) - but that's not exclusive to the minus button method of leaving, it can happen either way.

Ah, perhaps they were just talking about the ‘someone quietly left’ thing then, mistakenly thinking it was a glitch.
Oops. I hope I didn’t scare anybody! 😭

as sunchild already said, it basically gives you a timer. this is especially a pain if the person who opened their gates did so for turnip prices, because it'll cancel for anyone who is currently selling after the timer has run out and selecting a whole pocket of turnips again ain't fun.

This is the first time that I've heard about it. What glitch were they talking about? If it's the one where villagers suddenly stopping whatever they're crafting (or becoming bugged to the point that they either don't hand out the recipe and/or start holding a tool indoors), then I'm pretty sure that's completely unrelated. I had that happen to me a couple of days ago when I had people over and the same thing happened to a host I was visiting last night; nobody left via the - button.

If it's some other kind of bug, then I honestly have no idea. But yeah, "Someone quietly left." only shows up when a person disconnects (either by accident or on purpose) and resets everyone's progress since the game didn't get a chance to save everyone's data.

There's no glitch. Someone explained it earlier, but if someone leaves via the minus button prompt it can time out under certain conditions and let's the person who opted to leave via the minus button to leave. If this happens, it causes all other players to get reset to a previous autosave.

It isn't a glitch, it's just an undesirable outcome.

Yeah I guess it was a false alarm - sorry guys!! :’)

I did ask the person to explain what the glitch did, but I didn’t get a response, which led me to ask here. I can only assume they’ve mistaken the effects of ‘someone left quietly’ for a glitch.

Hello! I don't know much about this but once I was visiting somebody's island and someone else left via - button and caused us all to lose the things we had gathered. For example, I gave a tip of 5k bells and then I had my money back but also lost the DIY recipe I had obtained.

Turns out that isn’t a glitch, sorry it was a false alarm :’)
The responses of the peeps above give an explanation of why that happens!❤️

From my understanding, within the community, (social etiquette) do not use the minus button to leave an island if you are doing a diy grab or bag grab or just visiting a strangers island. People can lose bells, recipes, and villagers can quit crafting if you do. As said above, don't invite too many people to your island because you are just going to test their patience. Be kind friends!

Hi, they meant this:
Save Data Wipe Error

You're safe to do it as 1 on 1 (like no other person other than you and the host) but if you go to crowded ones, you will risk desyncing the saving process, causing a potential save data wipe. This is caused by pressing the (-) button to leave. This isn't exactly the - button's fault but most likely how unstable the multiplayer can get in crowded islands (and abruptly leaving/letting the countdown timer run out). Best you abstain from exiting via (-) button during turnip runs or other mass activities.

I think it's something to be wary of when trading or hosting with people you don't know, but when I play with my friends we always use the minus button. When you can communicate, you can easily say "once you're done let me know, I'm about to end." I always prefer to lick people out with the button because I don't have to sit through multiple people leaving, and it closes my gate right away. If I'm at an island and want to leave before everyone else I always say I want to leave and make sure nobody is doing anything important. When my friends are done catching a fish or talking to Timmy, I'll use minus.

Not sure why no one is mentioning this, but it was kind of big that it could (RARELY) possible corrupt your save.....Let me find the thread liink

I linked it on my post but I'm glad you mentioned it. I'm not exactly the head of information but I'm relaying reports by translating JP tweets. It's concerning that this hasn't been widespread enough...

I cannot for the life of me understand why they would design the game like this, to time out and reset if you use - button, but behave appropriately if you go through the airport. WHY NINTENDO, when you design the game to have 8 people playing simultaneously!

Actually, this might be a minor thing but rather the lack of hard save (like manual saving) we rely heavily on autosave and that's nearly messed up some of Nintendo's switch games (i.e Fire Emblem Three Houses' first week that SOFTLOCKS you if you saved at a specific battle) if only we had manual and autosave we'd have more backups with our save despite not having cloud backups. And I know, this might be abused by save scummers but that's the auto save is for (to stop abusing the manual save). But since we run solely on autosaves with no other saving options, we're pretty much gonna encounter a desync if we go online. Sure, rarely, but might be high since not everyone has a stable net and we don't have a server to host multiplayer stuff.

Also constant saving/timed saving could be bad because idek, from what I've observed so far the biggest issue has been the autosave (i.e the recent duping and the failure to properly rollback to the previous save if someone disconnects accidentally or letting the "leaving" timer run out)
