this is the article. i think it’s really cool that they’re doing this, but tbh, i kinda miss when everyone was white. they all looked the same, and no one would subconsciously judge, or let some internalized racism show a little. don’t get me wrong, i’m very glad that a major company is helping people get represented. thoughts?

Umm... I definitely don't miss when everyone was white? I mean, I don't want to start anything here, but I don't think the solution to preventing people from judging or showing internalized racism is make everything white by default 🤨

Anyway, I think the designs look fun! I'm not planning on using them, but it's a super cute idea.

Yeah I also don't miss when the only way for anyone to accurately represent themselves in game (which alot of people will make a version of themselves in game) was by tanning. And tanning fades. And was alot of work to maintain.

I saw this on the creators twitter and I absolutely loved their designs! I actually have a few of their designs rn, and FINALLY some acne representation! I have really bad acne myself and I don't see anythin with acne; anime, cartoons, TV shows, stuff like that. Finally some representation.

Edit: here's the creators twitter!

i like that they’re adding things to make people feel included. when i first read the header i was like, oh they’re adding new model for different body types and finally fixing the issues with darker skin tones! (like with the nose and stuff) and i definitely would have preferred that, but this is good too :)
i think the acne, vitiligo, and nevi designs look really good! i might use the acne one.

although i’m not sure what you mean by preferring when everyone was white? do you mean that you prefer when everyone was the same default white skin-tone in game?

I see you have good intentions here, but that's just not right... I can only imagine how a person of color would feel reading this sentence.
I don't think having everyone be white in game would be a better way to fight racism than having everyone represented. Imagine a black little girl who owns the game and wants the character to look like her but just has to pick the fair skin, that's sad. The world's population is diverse, not white. Adding all skin colors to AC is just such a basic thing to do with such a popular world-wide played game.

About the subject... I personally don't use custom designs much but I think this is a very positive thing from gillete! Can't say it would be negative.
edit: on a side note, when I first saw the campaign on Instagram I was a little surprised, a razor blade brand partnering with AC?

Yah, I can only imagine the annoyance. I like my character to look like me and, I guess "fortunately" in this context, I'm super white. In fact, I went through a period in my ACNL game where I TTed a lot and ended up with a super dark tan and it just felt so weird to me 😅 I also had no desire to run around with a parasol to prevent it. Tanning was kind of a cute idea, but poorly implemented. The ability to select our own skintone is WAY better! That way, if you want a tan for summer, you can do it! But if you want the darkest color year round, that's easy to do, too.

Gillette Venus came out like 20 years ago and even back then they had a black model. (Yea, I'm that old that I remember when it was new.) 😅 A variety of skin tones is great.

Inclusivity is good... though I always take it with a grain of salt when companies do these sorts of things because it just seems like marketing. But, if it does some good, I'm all for it.

It's really Nintendo/Animal Crossing though that has allowed us to customize our characters after ourselves or whoever we wish to be along with more unique features. For that I'm grateful.

This... uhm... i dunno what to think ;p i myself am white... and am ok with the current skin colors the game already offers......... what I don't understand is why these people have to make all the qr codes and use them so that they can feel "included" in the game ; v ; no one's gonna judge u if you make your character super dark or light skinned, and no one in the gaming world really knows or cares what u look like irl. i guess i just dunno why people are simping to have their unique skin disorders added in the game    but whatever they can do as they please <3

I think this is kind of fixing a problem that didn't exist for some of these, I understand the freckles and vitiligo (my brother has vitiligo) but I don't know how many of these things people were actually asking for. I'm overweight but I definitely don't want to carry that into animal crossing with me, for example. in a world where I've been having a constant battle with my own personal health, It's nice to have a world where I don't have to feel overweight to escape to until I can hit my target weight. I don't speak for everyone but I think there's a lot of people that would agree with that.

that being said, I'm also not a fan of how much skin is showing on some of these, I just prefer to not have a lot of skin showing in Animal crossing. that's a personal choice I know but it feels dangerously close to sexualizing the game, which is something I have adamantly fought against. I prefer that be left out of the game entirely but I know not everyone agrees with that.

Last point, I definitely don't miss when "everyone was white". while I think some of these are a little ridiculous, New Horizon's native options for changing skin color and adding some more diverse hairstyles and eye colors was a good decision, and one I think benefits a lot of people. I think it's good for people to be able to be represented in the games they play.

rant over. some of these I see as positive additions, some of them not so much. play the game however you want, just have fun and be respectful to everyone.

Yah, I mean, diversity is often just a marketing tactic... but if it's done well, and helps people, then it's still a good thing. Even if the intention was just about money. Also, I didn't know that about the company! I would've been eight twenty years ago, so razors weren't on my radar 😝
And I remember seeing an article about someone who was thrilled to be able to do their birthmark in ACNH because of the facial design feature! I used it to give my main character a mole/beauty mark like I have, but that article really made me realize how great of an option it is!

i’m asian, and sometimes i wished that i was white. in nl, i had an excuse that the developers didn’t care.

i agree with maybe wanting a different identity in-game, like ur story.
i also agree with the 'sexualizing the game' thing. it's supposed to be an innocent and childish lil cutsey game. it feels wrong to me to see people running around in thongs in this game.... not that ive ever seen that o v o im normal lol

absolutely do not miss when the defacto skin color was white~ lmfao! this is nice, but would be cooler if it was incorporated in-game. standards for in game avatars absolutely ought to be higher. i wanna be able to have the body type i have. and people who are amputees or use assistive tech or other otherwise not within normie standards deserve to look like they look, on screen, too.

like, it's 2020 and they're only just now adding some basic skin colors?? wack. we deserve body positivity built into our media/persona!

Because they want to look like what they look like IRL? Why is their desire to look like themselves any different from wanting the right skin or hair color? The only difference is skin disorders are still often stigmatized as something they should be ashamed of... but, of course, that's nonsense. So I can see wanting to take advantage of ANY opportunity to show they're PROUD of who they are and what makes them unique, even if other people judge it. I know I'll take advantage of any chance to acknowledge that I'm proud to be an autistic woman. It also offers more awareness in general. Plenty of people aren't super familiar with, say, vitiligo or port wine stain birthmarks. So seeing someone with it on their villager may spark a conversation- which is great!

I personally would love to have more body options. I'm a proud plus-sized woman, I'd love to be able to have a plus-sized character. It's not like they'd be scanning your body and assigning you a body type. But for people who would like to be represented, it's nice when they can be.
Also, I don't see it as sexualizing- it's swimwear. Most swimwear shows some skin. It's not inherently to be sexy or attractive. If you don't like it, don't use it. But there's nothing inherently wrong or bad about it.
Then again, if someone wants to sexualize their own game, that's their right. Now, if they share really risque designs on the design portal or something, I don't think that's a good idea. But whatever they wanna do in their game is fine by me.

i’m asian, and sometimes i wished that i was white.
And about this, I think many people who are not white have this desire precisely because of the way society has been dealing with differences for so long... So again I really don't think everyone should have to be white in game. But if you personally want to, you absolutely can! That's the beauty of having all the options available

It's kinda cool that New Horizons offers some sort of variety when it comes to character customization, but I, personally, don't rush to make my character look like me. I'm okay with people who want to do so tho. The only thing I want is more crazy hairstyles and hair colors to make my player character look more like my OC she's based on haha.
