Gig = Success

You weren't really being paid by the hour but congrats

Yeah, but still. Can you imagine what kind of money I'd be rakin' in if I actually played like 5 hours a day at that hourly rate? Sadly, that's not how musicians make their money... You always go from one place to another, and there's never any set pay or set schedule.

It shouldn't be about the money right now though. It should be about getting your name out there. If you do reach success then the money will take care of itself.

100% agreed. My main concern right now is making a name for myself, at least locally. As it stands, I think it's safe to say that a fairly decent amount of people know about me.

:P

But still not enough. Before I head off to college, I want to be one of the biggest flamenco artists in my state. D: And I don't think that's going to be impossible. By that time, my teachers will already have stopped playing at gigs due to age and other stuff, so my competition will be limited to some mediocre artists...

Of course, I may as well have to go beyond only my state. One of my best friends (he's a flamenco guitarist) moved to New York and began an internship (or, as he calls it, apprenticeship) with one of the best flamenco guitarists in America... So I dunno what's in my future.
My favorite band (Blue October) started their success in Texas and kept it in that region for a while. The result was undying support from the fans and now from all across the U.S. But whatever you do I hope it works out

Nice job Bully.

And asking for 80 bucks for an hour is modesty?!?!?
Asking for $80 for what was supposed to be a two-hour thing is REALLY modest, trust me. Even asking $80 for an hour is modest for this kind of thing. $100 for an hour is, I would say, average pay as far as performing arts is concerned.

@ Ultra - Yeah, I definitely know what I'm doing with this money. >_<

@ Gengar - Thanks, but that money's goin' towards paying off Driver's Ed.

:P

@ Prop - Yeah, starting small is definitely the first step, but I really think I'm on the verge of goin' big. I've been playing at places like this for a few years, so I think it's high time to start going places.

That is awesome! When I go to some events like that (I haven't gone to many) I always wonder what it's like to be a guitarist. My personal guitar teacher played at some of my events and we were able to play a duet together. That was really sweet. I'm glad you had fun.

^_^ Now you know what to expect for the next one.

Well...

I'd say it's a bunch of mixed feelings while you're playing for an audience that's not very receptive. First and foremost, I make a mental note that I am playing for myself and if some of them are eating and aren't listening, I let it slide. I go into a sort of trance at one point where I'm just engulfed by the music and don't even acknowledge that anybody else exists, only my guitar and I... It's a wonderful feeling. But then I get out of that trance and start noticing the people...

And sometimes it's not too pleasant, especially if a lot of them are talking and laughing and I have to play really loud so that they'll hear me. But that's just background music experience... when I'm playing at a concert and EVERYONE is focusing on me, it's a lot more intense and I'm in that trance for practically the whole thing. But I personally prefer background music shindigs because there's not as much pressure.

If I make a mistake in a concert, it'll definitely be noticeable. If I make a mistake while playing in the background, it might go unnoticed. So there's definitely less pressure with background music, but it comes with a price.

Wow, sorry, I rambled there.

:P

But wow, I've always wanted to play a duet like that! I've only played in a group of guitarists just once, and that was at a flamenco festival... But that was some years ago. so you play guitar, too? That's awesome!

Awesome... Money is always a good thing (even if you don't get to spend it freely)
