Getting villagers to leave...Coincidence, or nah?

This might sound kinda stupid, but bear with me here. A while ago, I read somewhere that sending a letter to a villager telling them to leave would make them move out of your town. It sounded pretty ridiculous to me, but I tried it anyway with Benjamin, and sure enough, the next day Benjamin told me he was leaving.

I thought it was just a coincidence, but I've done it with Stinky and Sally too, and it worked. Is it all just a series of coincidences, or could there be some kind of truth behind all of it?

It might be a coincidence. I did one of those "create a new character, talk to the villager you want to leave" things, and it worked. Twice. I'm not exactly sure either, but three times sounds like an awful lot for just a mere coincidence.

How did you word your letter to Benjamin?I've sent letters to villagers asking them politely to move and other letters with just the word "move" in them multiple times.Neither of these worked for me.

I find it difficult to imagine this would be programmed in the game really... I would say it's a coincidence but I could be wrong of course. Could you tell us excactly what you wrote in the letters? Was it the same letter for all 3? This way other people could try the same letter and testify.

I didn't think there was a definite way to MAKE villagers move. I know that friendship levels can count but I've never heard of letters. It is really interesting that it's happened multiple times though! For awhile, people thought that being mean/hitting them with your net/shovel made them want to move but that never worked when I wanted Cobb to leave and he actually stayed longer because he would be talking to me telling me to stop haha.

Every time I've done it, literally all I say in the letter is "Leave." It's worked almost every time, so I've never tried saying it any other way, haha.

(Edit: by "every time" I mean 3 out of only 4 times, so it's still really likely that it's just a coincidence. )

coincidence. they dont know what letters say, theyre programmed to just generate random responses.

I think it's a coincidence, but regardless, I still use the technique.

I also send "ask me to build a PWP!" or "interested in a public works project? just ask!" to the villagers I want to request certain PWPs from me ;__; lol

Hence why I still ask my villagers to do certain things in letters - request PWPs, move, change clothes, etc. I like to think they listen to me, even if they don't really.

I do the same thing! Most of the time it's about clothes. I say like "hey, I got a new shirt for you and I think it will look so cool/cute on you! Try it on!" lol makes me smile when they actually change into clothes I sent them :3

I do the clothes thing too (I just say "wear this" a bunch of times or at least once in the letter) but it's probably just a coincidence... it would be neat if it actually worked, though, as a foolproof method.

I wish they programed villagers to actually understand your letters,then it probably wouldn't be as tedious to try to move someone out.

Yeah, that's the main reason why I keep doing it, even if it's not for real, lol. It's like, if you believe hard enough, maybe it will come true
