The one thing I don't like about this game is how long it takes to get a certain pwp. All I want are modern pwp's and I can't seem to get them because the only ping my villagers ever do is buying items and selling items. :(

Yeah, PWP pings are unnecessarily rare. I've never bothered with it due to it being fairly tedious, but you could do the diving trick - look it up if you don't know about it.

One thing I've been doing with limited (although still better than nothing) success is to go stand at the edge of the pier on your beach, and make sure you have no Bells (put them all in your ATM) and fill your inventory with flowers/tools/unassessed fossils. I then set the timer item to 5 or 10 minutes and do something else while my 3DS is still open sitting nearby. Then when the timer is up I run around town and see if any villagers will ping. This strategy greatly reduces the number of things they will ping you for, as they won't give you items or ask to buy things or trade this way, they will either ask you a random question, ask to change their catchphrase/greeting, or suggest a PWP. If they tell you that you seem like you've been "playing too long" or that you "need a rest" then you should save and quit and then go back into the game.

Edit: Also if you have the diving suit (which I don't) then instead of standing on the beach you can dive into the water and swim to the far edge of your town. The thing is that you want to stay out of your villagers' sight for at least 5-10 minutes to get them to ping you once they see you again. You can also spend time doing stuff around town instead of sitting around waiting but there's a chance they might see you and restart the time necessary to get them to ping.
