So, I picked up my copy of New Leaf after over a year yesterday (my town was exactly what you would expect it to be). The reason I hadn't played for so long is that I had gotten burned out of the game (and that I was more interested in decorating my home than being mayor). But now I want to try and make my town great do you guys have any tips for a 'new player'?

Unlocking public work projects is one of the most important things you can do for improving your town. Besides that, concentrate on gardening and cleaning up the weeds, and reviving your probably mostly dead flowers. I'd also recommend looking for some nice path qr codes to put down some good looking roads. It really helps your town out a lot.

depends on what you want to do, but basically clean up your town, check your villagers, get villagers you want (look them up online).
also pwps!!! get pings for them and check which ones you want and from who you can get it (and if you really want a pwp but don't have that personality in that town you should probably get a villager with that personality :>)

then planning and building and stuff... i'd say look around on tumblr for pictures or visit some dream towns for inspiration :>

What are you trying to do? I'd start with cleaning things up if you have any weeds or dead flowers, plus re-introducing yourself to your villagers.

When I take a break from the game because I'm tired of playing, when I go back, I like to change things like the way my town is decorated or the villagers. It takes some work, but putting down PWPs, changing my paths, finding new clothes for my character, and things like that can make the game feel new again.

It sounds like Happy Home Designer would be right up your alley! That's just one month away. In the meantime, you can think about organizing your town and working on one section at a time.
