Gender Troubles

People make way too big of a deal about gender when it comes to games.

I play as both near equally for the sole reason of experiencing the game to it's fullest.

On every AC i've played, i've had both male and female characters.
Although in the past i've always chosen a male as my main simply because I myself am male.
But in New Leaf, I decided to go with a female as my main character!
Not really any specific reason. I just wanted to try something different! Also all the new designs for the female helped sharpen my resolve on which gender to play as well!

Again, people just take gender on games too seriously.
As long as you're not some 40 year old creep posing as the opposite gender trying to live out your "fantasies" (lol), I see no harm in playing as both! Haha

Just my two cents.

First I want to say I take offense to this comment. WHY should everyone have the same opinion as you? and Why should a person have to play a character that is the same gender as they are in real life? This is just a game after all and not reality.

While my mayor character is male, I have a female character that I play almost equally as much. and in past Animal Crossing games I have had main characters of towns that were female. just as I have played Female characters many times in other video games such as the Dragon Age and Fable series, and real table top Role Playing Games as well.

I really like the new options for designing dresses, and hopefully will eventually have the time to start messing around with new designs. I also like the wider range of options with socks/tights, pants/shorts, shoes, skirt/dresses, shirts, coats and accessories. The very reason I have both male and female characters, so I can experiment with all the different options available.

Wasn't this an issue with the Harvest Moon series? There were so many female players, and no choice to be female? Then they added it in?

I play as a male character, but often crossdress when the Able Sisters sell clothes and accessories I like that happen to be designated as being designed for females. I hate that the game even mentions this. Yes, I see it's a dress and a granny wig--I like it; why tell me every time that those items were designed for women. Why, when I buy a skirt, do they assume that it's a gift for someone? They follow you around the shop like you're going to steal something (even though it's impossible); and then they assume that you are not aware of societal heterosexist gender norms or have any interest in following them.

I picked male for Animal Crossing, but for games I want to start over (Pokemon for example) sometimes I'll just choose a girl for the heck of it. :P

I'm a female so I've got a female mayor but i've made her wear pants because I hate dresses :') both in the game and in real life :P I think my character looks 10x better because of it too!!

I honestly think that you misunderstood his comment. He basically said that everyone should choose the gender that reflects who they are. Even if you're born male, if you feel like a female then a female character would be a reflection of who you are basically. I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's what he meant to say.

I choose my own gender unless I'm forced to choose the opposite; e.g. "gender-locked" characters in RPGs, MMOs, etc.

This game lets you wear anything regardless of your gender though so picking one doesn't make much difference. Eventually Shampoodle lets you choose the opposite gender's hairstyles as well.

My main character is female because I am one, and I decided to try and make her look like me (except for wearing girlier things than I do in real life). I do make male characters as side characters, though, too. Currently, one out of three of my characters is male, but I'm planning to make the last one male once I can figure out where to put his house so it's even. I usually try and keep that kind of stuff equal, even in other games, like having half of my team male and half female in Pokemon.

I'm a male, but playing as a girl. I'll admit that AC girl looks really cute (like Baby Daisy) sooooo... :P

The furniture in my house will reflect who I am. As for the appearance of my girl character, well, I want to make her look as adorable as possible. XP

Also, I love to see my O.C. as mayor.

Hopefully, I don't sound like a creep. :b

Although, I've been debating to myself that I should create a male character not only for storage, but mainly for multiplayer.

And I think you may be missing the point of the member calling them out. Not everybody plays their AC character as an extension of themselves, which is what the original member was saying how we should all play the game.

I picked a girl, because I am one. Mostly because I feel like it would be weird to be and act something I'm not. But I do agree it would be interesting to see what it would be like to be a guy. I do wear some guy clothes on my character though! ^-^

In animal crossing I have always played as a female because I am female. In other video games I don't really care whether I'm playing as a girl or guy, I just pick something.

I don't see how someone making a simple statement about how the game should be played is so offensive that it warrants several people replying to it with rude comments. I'd understand if it was an actual offensive comment regarding gender, because that would be highly offensive to the trans community, but I believe his comment had nothing to do with that or discrimination. I'm pretty sure people might have been misinterpreting it that way, which is why I wanted to say something. If I end up being wrong then I apologize. :p

There's a much larger emphasis on gender in the dialogue in this game than I ever remember there being in the past games. Of course, I got bored of CF really fast and hardly remember any of the dialogue, so it may be about even with CF, I don't know... But either way there is a lot of gender emphasis in the dialogue.

Did you play both female & male characters, Envy? I don't recall any particular male lines of dialogue in WW either. The random conversations I've had can be catered to both guys/girls & nickname choices like 'sweetie' can't be just exclusive to males. Additionally, for any female Mayors out there: I know that when I rudely PUSH a villager they call me a 'punk...' What do they say to female Mayors? Thanks!

You can play as a girl or boy if you want to. However, I suggest girl if you like the skirts, dresses and tights. You will still be able to wear shirts and pants/short like a boy if you want to. In fact, picking to be a female allows you to wear all of the clothing in the game without your character looking wrong (you know what im talking about).

Anyway, I play as a male because I am a male myself because it kind of makes you relate to the character you are playing as. If you are male, the male and female characters act accordingly to your gender so you can actually understand them and who they are. For example, the charming male characters will flirt with you if you are female, but if you are male, they are likely to talk about impressing "the ladies" and being popular.
