Gender Troubles

So, I have played animal crossing in the past on the gamecube and my character was male. The fashions were just 'ehh' and the customizable options for the male shirts always looked a little better than the dresses. Heck, even the GIANT bugeyes were so adorable on my character that I just chose male and stuck with it.

But new leaf has me confused. The customizable fashions for women look ****ING AMAZING! And I could totally have two characters but, as the mayor, I just want one character to obsess over and dedicate my life to. So, my question is which gender do you prefer playing and why? Would you ever switch? Why? (And please, no answers like "I'm X so I play as X gender duh lol" because I'm curious about deeper answers than that)

Thank you :3

I've always played as a male because I'm a male. I have, however, created "dub" characters that are female that hold onto to things for me and as well as my pattern designs. But really, I prefer playing as a male because the character I play reflects who I am. Same should be said for everyone.

I play as a male because I'm a male. This will probably be one of the most common answers you will get to your question. :) But I will say, I personally like the sporty gear that goes along nicely with the male character. With that being said, females can wear sports gear as well but I think it looks better on males. That's just my thought. (:

The only difference really is your eyes. A male can get female haircuts, and wear female dresses. WEaring a dress causes you ro run like a girl. So, really, the genders are the same sans eye choices, and what people refer to you as.

Anyway, I play as a girl because I am one, and I'm a huge tomboy in real life so I love to dress my character up in cute little dresses... just to pretend, hehe.

I am really disappointed in the female eyes. None of them are quite as adorable as THOSE HUGE monstrosities that the male characters have. I was just curious as to why more people would not switch but I guess playing an extension of yourself who is the opposite gender is a bit weird. :p

Same should be said for everyone.

First I want to say I take offense to this comment. WHY should everyone have the same opinion as you? and Why should a person have to play a character that is the same gender as they are in real life? This is just a game after all and not reality.

While my mayor character is male, I have a female character that I play almost equally as much. and in past Animal Crossing games I have had main characters of towns that were female. just as I have played Female characters many times in other video games such as the Dragon Age and Fable series, and real table top Role Playing Games as well.

I really like the new options for designing dresses, and hopefully will eventually have the time to start messing around with new designs. I also like the wider range of options with socks/tights, pants/shorts, shoes, skirt/dresses, shirts, coats and accessories. The very reason I have both male and female characters, so I can experiment with all the different options available.

You essentially made have women slaves.

I am male so I play as male.

It's not really weird at all. Gender is a social construct, therefore fluid, unlike biological sex. No reason at all why a guy shouldn't play as a girl or vice versa, since the spectrum of human expression is a lot more complex (and interesting) than pink or blue. That said, I almost always play females in games because many games still don't allow the choice, and so I take advantage of the option when it's available. In AC, I've never made a male character. but in games like Morrowind, Skyrim, etc, I have.

I'm a female yet I almost always make my characters male. It's more fun that way. But for New Leaf I chose to be a girl because of the new designs and everything. I'm thinking of making a male character just for the hell of it, but who knows lol.

There just isn't enough content that effectively separates a male or female Mayor. Apart from simple appearance characteristics, I would have liked a greater focus in the dialogue trees between residents & a male/female Mayor.

I always play as a Female when possible. I do tend to make Male characters too! It really doesn't matter to me what gender I play as. I just usually play as a female. I love Fashion and the QR system and large variety of clothing makes me happy! I have a Male character I like to dress up too.

I'm a male, but I chose to play a female player solely for this reason:

finally had the excuse to make this LOL

I play as a female because I liked the customization options that came for girls (eyes and hair) earlier on. Might make my secondary character a male though.

I've always played as a female simply because, as someone else said, the character is an extension of myself. I have, recently, considered making a male character to hold patterns and whatnot, but in my mind, he would be an extension of my husband instead of myself. I am finding it an interesting thought to dress him up and coddle him a little. :D

There's a much larger emphasis on gender in the dialogue in this game than I ever remember there being in the past games. Of course, I got bored of CF really fast and hardly remember any of the dialogue, so it may be about even with CF, I don't know... But either way there is a lot of gender emphasis in the dialogue.

I agree. I think it is cute when the jocks call me "Ladybro." There is a lot of Ms. Mayor and things like that as well. Like you, I don't remember this much gender specific dialog in any of the others, and I played most all of them extensively (although I did not get as deep into the GameCube version as I could have).

When I was younger I never thought to change my character's gender or name. It was always a female with my name, because that's what I am.
I did the same in this game. I like the idea of a female mayor, it's different. So yeah

Yea. If I was to be female it would have to be with those eyes because I don't like the little dots or the sideways eyes. But...they are SO creepy.

But look! He's so amazing. I selected him randomly on the gamecube and I've chose him everytime with his dumb little face. Aww. :P

I'm using that face also! It reminds me of that overly attached girlfriend meme :P

I play a girl character. I don't know why. I'm a girl in real life, but whenever I play online games I usually make male avatars. Right now my mayor is looking very girly, but every now and then I cut her hair short and dress her up like a boy, I think that it's cute. One of my pattern mules is male, but I don't use him much... ;-;
