So i just hit a rock with a shovel and it broke and a sapphire popped out......What do i do with it? Is it anything special or just basically extra bells?

you can use it to customize certain furniture, but other than that it's just good for bells. try selling it in retail using the flea market. i get about 4x more than what reese pays me. multiply the starting price by 4 and subtract 1 and as long as it isn't big villagers will buy it

Every day in your town a fake rock appears, and if you break it with your shovel, you get some ore! You can sell it for a few thousand bells, or you can modify furniture with it once Cyrus in Re-Tail awakes from his slumber. It's only compatible with certain types of furniture, though, so keep that in mind.

Certain pieces of furniture can be customized with them, and if you bring three gold ores and 10,000 bells to Cyrus, he can make a random item from the golden series for you. They can also just be sold for some extra bells. Here's a list of what can be customized with each type of gem, taken from Liquefy's FAQ on GameFAQs.
