Is there any way to tell what your friendship level is with a villager? Or do you just have to complete tasks and errands for them over and over, until they finally give you a pic of themselves?
I’ve been trying to get Katt to give me her portrait forever, but it feels like I’ve done so many tasks for her already!

There are a couple of things that indicate whether you have a high level of friendship with a villager:

-They come to visit unannounced.
-When you sit with them on a bench they exchange a look with your character and then sit smiling with their eyes closed.
-When you call their name with the megaphone there will be a ping and they'll wave or bow.

Try giving your villager non-native perfect fruit or something from their favorites/birthday list:

This usually works for me when I feel like I'm close to getting a villager's pic.

You can use a microphone and call there name. You must be able to see them, but not be right next to them. They will either wave or bow to you with the music sound, and the longer the music sound, the better your friendship is!

From what I know so far, when a villager comes to your house unexpected, it's a good sign you are getting high friendship with your villagers. Also, like everyone else has said, they respond with the microphone by waving or bowing. Just keep doing requests for villagers and give them rare things like perfect fruit and custom made furniture. Do this and you will get the villager picture you want soon enough. c:

I?ve actually never tried the microphone thing with my villagers before, so I?m totally going to try this! Also, I don?t have any benches either so I?m going to try building one and see how my villagers react when I sit with them. Thank you all for the advice :D

Is this certain, or just a good indicator? I can yell all of my villagers names into the megaphone and get a smile and wave back, and they all come over unannounced.

However, Al moved yesterday and didn’t give his picture in the goodbye letter..... I stopped speaking to him once he promised he’d move, does friendship fall that fast? Or are these indicators not 100% certain way of telling?

I’m not fussed he didn’t send it though, in a way, maybe that was his gift—-sparing me of THAT selfie.

I had a weird thing happened today with Beau. It was my first time using the megaphone to test friendship. He bowed, but then he asked me to bring him some fruit. I brought him an orange. After that, when I used the megaphone he appeared to ignore me.

I am trying to see if I can get villager pictures without swapping furniture in their homes. Some of them I already messed up their homes, so I am swapping their furniture back to the original. or at least trying to!

But for my newer villagers, what I am trying to do is raise their friendship level high enough with only the following things: letters, letters containing gifts of regular fruit, responding to requests their requests for fruit (I only am giving regular fruit since I do not yet have perfect fruit for my town), requests to visit, hide-and-seek, bringing a villager to their house, and time capsules.

Things I am not doing: giving them furniture for their homes, mailing them furniture or clothing (unless they are out of their default clothing, in which case I do the trick of mailing it at 4:57 p.m.), requests to deliver packages, requests to catch bugs or fish (I am trying to keep their homes original so I am no longer giving them anything that will end up in their home).

I do not know yet whether this method will work. I am having particular difficulty getting my adorable smug Zell’s picture, even though I have given him furniture gifts and I am still working to put his house back to original, so he is still receiving furniture gifts. I don’t know if it’s because he is a smug and they are harder to befriend. I also time travel, but I am pretty current (I am currently on Nov. 3, so one day behind.)
