so my 9th villager moved out today and i have arranged a new place where a few can move into. i know i have to put a path everywhere u dont want it to move, but all i have to do is leave a 3x3 space free where i want the new one to move in? just wanting to make sure before i mess this up.

Do this on repeat pretty much through out your entire town. At any location you want a villager, just remove patterns and put up a 3x3 box where you want a villager to plot. Like this:

Just remember while villager houses are 3 by 3, you need the surrounding area free (5 by 5). As long as you can "dig" where you place the patterns, it SHOULD work. If it's near another villager's house, it has to be at least two tiles away from that villagers house.
Thankfully it's the hardest part, and it's first and not the last. It shouldn't take more than an hour! Just make sure to do a few walks through of your town after laying them all down to check for any place you might have missed!
