I just had my save file corrupted for whatever reason and I'm super upset. I put my *life* into that town, and now it's gone. Does anyone know why save files become corrupted? I've never had any experience with this and would like to know any way to prevent it.

That's so sweet of you, but I definitely want a fresh start in my new town, and this time no time traveling x3 I'm not sure what might've caused it since all of my items were purchased from the shops in my town, nothing even from people on this site.

tbh sometimes corruptions just happen to games. its an inevitable part of programming. theres no flawless code, and theres no flawless game. you likely didnt even do anything wrong.

Some things I've read about corruption causes on this site and elsewhere: anytime a save is interrupted it can corrupt your game, using the 3DS transfer tool, deleting things from the SD card while it's in a PC or SD card issues and I've read a digital game is more likely to corrupt than a physical cart. I've not heard of actual hacked items corrupting a New Leaf town but the act of hacking can certainly cause problems.

Mine was a digital version, not a real card. I guess that could be why? I've never hacked or even taken the SD card out before so I guess it was just bad luck. I guess a fresh start is nice, though!

I've only ever heard of files becoming corrupt after hacking. Whether you did or not, it really stinks that you got a corrupt file. Idk what I would do if I lost my game.... T.T
I know how you feel, I've lost my town due to corruption back in May. I was really upset... I had this town for only two months, so it wasn't much developed, but what hurt me was to lost all of my villagers...
Having a fresh, new town is still a great thing. Also, you can always visit your old town with the Dream Suite to bring back all kinds of memories.
I'd like to say that I really don't believe hacked items can corrupt a file. Hacking your file IS dangerous, but receiving hacked items and corrupting a file because of it..? Never heard of this. The town I lost was not hacked though (I've never hacked a 3DS), but yes, my game was digital and this could explain why it happened.

What exactly happened, I ask because I also recently was forced to reset my town after it somehow became corrupted and I still have no clue how it happened. I have a physical copy and to this day it still doesn't quite work properly, crashing whenever I try to visit other people's towns and certain islands for tours.
Don't be too scared, it's not very common to happen, even if the game is digital. Just be careful and don't hack, you should be fine!

My Japanese ones are digital (like I'm going to want to wait 2 weeks or more to play a game when I can use a credit card to download it and play instantly), so since digital are more prone to it, I transfer my save to my computer after every play. I also swap out SD cards frequently so one card doesn't get too much use because for whatever reason they put an insane amount of saves states into New Leaf's play (ie when you go to Club Tortimer, and every time someone comes or leaves it saves).
I ALWAYS recommend backing up your data after every play session for other digital owners, because like they say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Depends on the SD card quality too, I've heard more from those who use the cheap versions that come with the 3DS versus a higher quality one like SanDisk.
