So after some thought, I finally bought New Leaf! Arriving tomorrow. Could someone possibly give me a few tips, as I'm only familiar with New Horizons, such as can I scan villagers via amiibo cards and/or how do I get villagers as I definitely want Buck! I think he's actually the main reason I bought it. Also, what types of fruits are there? Thank you for reading!
Yay !!! That is great. I can't remember much but I do know you can scan amiibos and you can also visit someone who has Buck in boxes and pick him up ! If I recall correctly fruits are pears, apples, oranges, peaches and cherries, like NH, with the exception that there is a tropical island with 4 more types of fruits (lemon, mango, durian and lynche) EDIT: I just remembered I forgot to add the fruit from palm trees: coconuts and bananas

That's great news about the amiibos as I have Buck's, I need my boy with me to start my new journey! Ooh bananas! I'm hoping some nice members will help out a NL newbie with some fruits!

I am sure they will! I would love to help you but I left my 3ds at home and won't go back til mid september.... have fun with you new game and finding Buck! ❤
Yay! This is by far one of my favourite games in the series. One big tip is every town will have a perfect fruit, so for example I have apples and the perfect fruit is a dark red that looks shiny! If you accidentally sell it, you can't get it back in your own town So definitely try to find it first and grow some perfect fruit trees! It increases friendship more than regular fruit I believe (only for apples, cherries, peaches, oranges and pears).
Also villagers can move in where ever they want so you can always use path designs to guide where you want the plot. I always find the first few villagers always put up plots near your house!
Important advice: Your character's eye shape is determined by the responses you give to Rover's questions at the very beginning of the game and they can not be changed. So if you care at all about the appearance of your character, search up a guide on Google. I made this mistake multiple times and got stuck with an eye shape that I'm not terribly in love with.
Also I must echo another point laid out in this thread: Villagers will move wherever they want and while you can use different methods (that are rather tedious) to guide them into the spot you want them, you can't move their houses once they've decided on a spot. This means that especially in the early stages of the game, your plans will be ruined when someone moves in over your flower gardens and orchards. So be prepared to lose a lot of progress because of this.
Someone else's Able Sisters shop featuring the ugly shirt designs.(Green ducky tank, ugly orange thingy and generic white shirt)
Here's a tip about something I learned the hard way: In the Able Sisters shop there are some ugly shirt designs. If you don't change these designs to hats or umbrellas, your villagers will start wearing them in place of their default clothes fairly early on in the game. They won't wear the hat or dress designs in the shop so you don't have to change those.
new leaf was my first ac game and my favorite, i hope you have lots of fun with it! in the game you can place public works projects, it’s kind of like when you could place furniture outside in new horizons except you need to fund them. for most public works projects you can demolish and put them somewhere else but for projects like the campsite you can’t. also be 100% confident in where you place your house in the beginning, i don’t believe you can move it.
there are many different fruits, the defaults that you can get are apples, peaches, oranges, and pears. you will only get one of those four fruits as your native fruit but you can trade with other people to get more. you can only grow perfect fruit of your native fruit, there are also tropical fruits which are durians, coconuts, bananas, persimmons, and lemons which you can obtain by trading and by also going to tortimer's island.
I'll be going off on what others have already said, and expand on them a little:
In addition to not being able to change your eyes, or the shape of your mouth, it'd also take a while before you'll be able to change your hair at Harriet's Shampoodle — a shop that opens once you have the prerequisites needed to have it built. It's the same with the footwear you start off with, too. You can come by my town if you want to change your hair or buy some socks/shoes until both shops open in your own town.
Villagers will eventually move out if you don't intervene. I know people hated seeing their villagers move out (especially in the older games), but New Leaf does a great job of informing the player of this situation by having said villager ping them that they're moving, and telling them when exactly they'll move. Even talking to other NPCs will inform about this. If you have the Welcome amiibo+ update installed, the timespan increases from five to ten days.
As @Tay. mentioned, each town has its own perfect fruit, but the perfect fruit has to already be a fruit native to your town in order for it grow into a perfect fruit tree. If your town's native fruit is peaches, you can only plant perfect peaches; any perfect foreign fruit tree will bear regular ones.
Anyhow, feel free to tell us about your town once you start playing the game! If you need any help, I'm free whenever, and my 3DS FC is listed on my profile.

Thonky guide is a gold mine of useful information. Take your time and pester Isabelle while you're getting settled. Really good advice from previous posters because NL can be treacherous and unforgiving at first. My personal favorite game that I play every day. https://www.thonky.com/animal-crossing-new-leaf/
Thank you everyone for your advice! I haven't started it yet, I charged my DS up and got the feel of it again, by playing Mario Kart and Pilotwings. I think tomorrow will be the day! I'm really sorry in advance but I'm going to have a lot of questions! The main one is, when can I have Buck on my island? I have his amiibo, I just need him as soon as possible!

On day 2, just wander all over your village and Wisp will give you his lamp. Take it home and swipe Buck's card and you will get the option to move him in.

OK. Tomorrow will have a 6th villager (probably squatting in a spot you don't want unless you've taken the proper precautions of laying down blocking paths) Also, Wisp will be found lurking "somewhere" waiting to give you his magic lantern.
After a few hours of playing, I think I've got to grips with the basics, I'm making comparisons to New Horizons to make sure!
The train station is the same as the airport. (Porter will take you to where you want to go or receive visitors.)
The locker in the train station is the same as home storage.
MEOW coupons are the equivalent to Nook Miles.
I was disappointed I couldn't take any screenshots of Rover at the beginning!
I thought Tom Nook sounded/looked a bit different, then I realized it was a villager called Tom!
It would be great if someone could answer a few questions: (I'm sure I will pester you all with more!, Sorry in advance!)
When can I buy some tools, etc. I've seen buried fossils but can't dig them up yet!
Does Brewster and K.K. appear at any point?
Can I go on mystery tours via the Train Station?
I planted an orange tree in the plaza, so will that will be my perfect fruit?
I have tulips and cosmos, so I gather they are my native flowers?
I collected some shells down at the beach, can you sell them to Timmy and Tommy? (Sorry, I've forgotten the name of their shop already!)
Main thing, how do I earn some bells? Mr. Nook still has to hit me with the bill for my house!
I am really looking forward to getting Wisp's lamp, as I NEED BUCK!!!!!
Thanks to everyone who has replied so far!
I thought this was Tom Nook!
I am the Mayor of Hazzard!
I was delighted to have one of my New Horizon villagers as a starter!
I really do love the train station, Porter fits in a treat!
Blathers, you might have stayed awake to welcome the Mayor!
Nookling Junction! That's it, I'm probably not going to remember this one!)
