This one may seem controversial, but I'm gonna throw it out there anyway. The Da Vinci Code: Popularized the works of Leonardo da Vinci (not that they were ever unpopular), brought attention to some of the historical wrong-doings of the church (IE Friday the 13th), influenced society to question the kind of person Jesus Christ really was. Sparked a trend of treasure hunting movies and made puzzle games popular.
The Craft: Demonized and popularized Wicca, witchcraft (Wiccan and otherwise), and other forms of New Age beliefs and Paganism. The popularity of this offensive cult classic probably influenced creators of shows and movies such as Charmedand Practical Magic.
A Nightmare On Elm St.: Arguably the most famous film of director Wes Craven's career, this movie that most believed was doomed to failure launched a pop-culture phenomenon and gave birth to the infamous villain Freddy Krueger.
Silence of the Lambs: Based on the works of author Thomas Harris, this is one of several movies inspired by the serial killer Ed Gaines. The movie introduced us to the heroine FBI Agent Clarice Starling, who's strong, feminist demeanor brought new popularity and attention to the feminist movement, influencing movie makers to create similar characters. The movie also introduced the infamous psychopath Hannibal "the Cannibal" Lector, who is perhaps more famous for his psychological prowess than his actual crimes, and jump-started the career of Sir Anthony Hopkins, who portrayed the villain. The movie went on to become the third movie in Academy Awards history to win all top five categories for the Awards.
