Are there any good strategies for getting art aside from time traveling?
The only thing I can think of is based on a few threads I've seen here lately. Apparently Cranky/Lazy/Jock villagers can mail you real art as gifts. I also saw that photos are no longer given in person when you gift a villager, but if you fill your inventory and give from a stack of non native fruit, the villager will mail you a gift and can send a photo fromthe mailed gift table. Therefore, it makes sense to me that they could potentially send art too if it's part of that table.
Has anyone verified whether this works or not? If not, how can you trigger a villager to mail you art?
As a side note, searching for info on spawning art is a real pain: everything online is how to tell real from fake, or how to time travel.
Sometimes there are more than 1 real art. If you create additional characters you can buy them. You can also visit him on other people’s islands. I can’t verify your theory though. I haven’t really been trying to get pictures. But I have gotten real art in the mail from my cranky villager.
I've gotten art in the mail from lazy and smug villagers. Only ever real from lazy villagers. I don't know if that helps but that's been my experience. Both times seemed to be random occurrences. Unfortunately unless you visit loads of friends or have second users on the switch, there's not much you can do without time traveling. I only finished my museum after buying art on this forum and elsewhere online!
You could create 3 other human characters to buy all 4 of Redd's art when he comes to visit, and then maybe trade or sell the fakes online and use the funds to buy real ones, or trade them for other real ones (sometimes people prefer fakes over real)
Always have a dummy character for extra stuff, not just Redd. You can get multiple items from Gulliver(arr), Saharah, Pascal, Flick/CJ models, different mom colors, etc if you log in with a different character.
You can get real and fake art from your villagers in the mail. You can do the fruit stack trick to always get them to mail you something the next day. Idk which personality gives what but I heard that smugs always give fakes.
I have 2 extra characters i use to get art from Redd(this is rare because he usually only has fakes when he shows up). I don't have a lot of art but I have a friend who has given me some. I have received real and fake art in the mail( 1 fake from lazy 1 real from cranky). as for the photos my understanding is give them wrapped fruit until they ask u to change their phrase(this is when friendship is high enough to get pics) then do the stacked fruit trick. i got one today doing that. I have also read they can be obtained as a reward for running an errand/bringing medicine,lost item return,treasure hunt,item trade,when they randomly ping u to give you something or if you give them an item valued at 2500 or more. there are also people gifting them iron lamps and hanging terrariums but be careful doing this. they have an inventory cap of 32 items for furniture so if u give them too many of these they will start getting rid of older stuff(their original furniture).
Loveclove, that's reassuring. If giving fruit gets you a photo in the mail but not in person, that means the villagers are drawing from a whole separate table of item possibilities when they mail a gift. Has anyone been able to get a mailed painting as a reward for gifting fruit?
I think buying would be the fastest method to collect art fast. TBT or NMT is probably your best bet. There are sellers both here and on other sites that will take currency in exchange for art, so it'd just be a matter of collecting enough currency to be able to buy them outright.
Trading art for art requires that you get Redd so that you can have fake art in the first place. Even if you use alternate characters, there are only so many pieces you can get in a day (4) whereas if you buy art, that limitation doesn't exist. The only limitation would be your time and money.
If you're interested in doing this, I'd recommend you expand your search to outside our forum. While our forum has some great sellers (and accepts TBT!), the number of sellers is far fewer than you'll see on other trading sites like Nookazon, or on certain Discord channels. If you want to buy items fast, I'd recommend broadening your search as much as you can so that you can see as many offers as possible.
Thanks for all the responses guys! I've thought about trying to buy or trade for art, and I know that's the fastest and most surefire way. But I know that most art comes from time traveling, and even if it's not me doing it, it still feels a little like cheating. I also have a good group of friends watching for Redd, and we aren't letting any of his art go to waste- somebody always buys everything he offers.
What I'm really curious about how is villagers gifting art. It seems like the only in game way to get art outside of waiting for Redd, and I haven't been able to find much info about it. I was hoping that the fruit gifting trick could force villagers to have a chance at sending art, but that is just a supposition on my part and not supported by any actual data.
Has anyone really dug into the mechanics of what causes a villager to mail you art?
