Expert Badges Question

When attempting to complete the Expert Badges, is it judged by how many fish or bugs you catch - or how many times you swing your net, cast your fishing rod, or dive? Some sites say that it's based on your catches, where others claim it's by using the tool. Is it possible to just repeatedly swing your net 5,000 times and get the badge? Thanks!

Also, do your catches on the island mini-games contribute to the badges, or is it based on what you do in your village alone? Especially for the Balloon Popping Badge, thanks again!

It's based off of the number of bugs/fish you catch, but those caught (or balloons popped) in the island games do not count towards your total.
