Also, they seem to work for about an hour ish? It's hard to tell because you never know when they started crafting, but it's for a decent amount of time

If you get them at the beginning of when they start crafting, then they can craft up to ~2.5-3hrs (granted you stay in the house the whole time and there are no connection problems during the visits). As mentioned in an above comment though, you would have to know when they started crafting and the only way you would know that is if you were in another villager's house prior and that prior villager stopped giving out DIY.
