does the town tree brow on idle?

I have no idea why but I have been on idle alot today.. will the town tree grow as the DS is on idle?

The town tree grow when you reach these milestones:
-5 days and 5 hours
- 20 days and 20 hours
- 50 days and 50 hours
- 100 days and 100 hours
- 180 days and 180 hours
- 300 days and 300 hours
- 500 days and 500 hours (fully grown)
What do you mean by idle? Just leaving your 3DS on?

It doesn't grow if you close your DS. I tried it about a couple of weeks ago. You have to keep the DS open
