Does the grass really grow back?

I've never had a problem with grass wear in my ACNL town, and this is coming from someone whose City Folk town was a sand pit. I recommend making paths because you can't see the grass wear under them and you won't be wearing down the grass off of your paths much if you don't run off of the paths. As others have pointed out, time traveling does quickly restore your grass as long as you know what you are doing to avoid having villagers move out.

The best ways to grow it back are to wait for a villager to ping to move, don't let them and then time travel forward a month and then back to that same date. Another way is not to play for a couple days. Regrows back rapidly this way.

I am currently taking a break because of grass erosion. I'm on week one and plan on returning in another week. I figure two weeks should bring my grass back.

If you haven't played for a week you should be good to go. It grows back fast when you don't play.

There are some patches where it cannot re grow, but if you really hate it, cover everything with designs because they can protect your grass much, much better because there is no wear whenever you step on a design tile. I've had paths since release that I've walked on thousands of times likely, and yet the grass is still in perfect condition.

This has been said millions times but I will say it again: patterns cover up the grass, they don't protect it!!!

some dirt patches are permanent so matter what you do unless you hack you will have dirt patches in your town :)

even walk fades grass but not as much as running does!

In city folk: every time you loaded the game (within the ingame day) you had the chance of wearing the grass.
So multiple loads of the game caused a lot of grass wear.
When you wifi'd the game saved and caused a reload - each reload allowed the grass to wear again - hence players who wified a lot could get a lot of grass wear.

The grass would only wear on a specific tile/spot/space if you stepped on that space - so there was a solution - if you loaded the game many times - keep to the paths on all but one load (the one off path load is when you go for the money rock, fossils etc).

Didn't matter if you walked or ran - it was the act of actually stepping on the tile that caused the wear.

Is this the same in acnl? It is certainly possible: I do load the game many times in an ingame day - (doesn't matter if its the same character or an alt) - and I have got noticable grass wear - a lot really because I am not following the rule of 'keep to the paths on all but one load of the game'.

As other posters have said - grass grows back a bit each day (in cityfolk it only grew on the days you played).
And snow seems to help the grass to recover (once it has melted players have reported the grass has grown back?)
Flowers do not seem to help as much as they did in ac cityfolk. Not sure.
And as most posters have said - patterns on the ground do not stop the grass from eroding - if you step on a tile/space/spot (whether its got a pattern on it or not) the grass will wear.

Regrowing grass in New Leaf:

Fertilizer and the Beautiful Town ordinance do not help regrow grass.

Placing patterns on the ground will not prevent grass deterioration.

Staying off the grass all together will help it slowly regrow.

Watering flowers on decaying grass doubles the regrowth speed (the flowers must be watered for this to count). Stepping or walking over the flowers counteracts this and will instead count as walking on the grass, deteriorating it instead.

Villagers walking on grass or watered flowers does not deteriorate it.
Growing bushes or trees help regrow grass on the tile on which they are planted.

Rain and snow will slowly regrow grass. However, as with watered flowers, stepping on any grass tiles will counteract the regrowth and cause deterioration instead.

Time traveling two or more weeks forward in time will regrow grass. The amount of regrown grass will be directly proportionate to how far forward the player has traveled.

Unlike in Animal Crossing: City Folk, grass will regrow even on days when the game is not running. (The game will simulate grass growth for any length of time since the game was last played.)

Loading save files multiple times a day, including loading different characters, does not affect the growth of grass.
