does giving the villager a birthday present of their preferred style raise friendship

what happens if you give them a gift that they don't hate/like vs one that they like, will the one they like increase friendship more?

They react more favorably compared to giving a neutral gift or a gift that they dislike. Presumably this also raises friendship more effectively, but I don't know how to measure the changes :[
