So I've been considering starting a second town for a little while now, and since I don't really have the money or the will to fork out for a second system as well as a second copy of the game, I decided to research using two copies on the same system as I heard this was possible. From what I've read on some forums:

- you can use two cartridges on one system as the game apparently saves to the cartridge (with digital saving to the SD card)
- you can have a physical cartridge and a digital copy
- regardless of if you have two cartridges or a cartridge and digital copy, you can't travel between the two towns if you use them on the same system

Could someone who actually uses two copies on the same system please help me out here? I'd like to know which of these two options is best, what exactly you can and can't do (such as swapping items and villagers between copies) and things like if the two copies have a risk of over-writing each other or if they use the same friend code (I'm assuming they do, but I'd like to know for sure). Thank you! ^^

I don't have two copies, but IMO the best option would be a physical and a digital since it's not tiring to always switch the cartridges and you don't have to remember which town is on which cartridge.

^^ That answer was totally unrelated to your question, but watevs //awkward laugh

I used to use two physical copies on one 3DS before I got my third system, everything you've heard is true :). They will share a friend code, you will not be able to move items between towns. To help me remember which town was which I would write a small number on each cartridge and it's box with a black permanent marker. I brought a N3DS recently and I play my third cycle town game on that, though for trading purposes I switch it back to my second system. Switching cartridges between systems is fine and won't affect the games so you can always borrow a friends 3DS to transfer items.

Hear hear I'm the same set up .. two physical copies on my 3DS, recently bought a N3DS, but without an extra system you can't do anything between your two towns. And switching cartridges isn't a problem, personally I prefer having hard copies as opposed to the digi versions. Go for it :D

i dont really see the need to have two acnl copies

(saying this, I have two, but only because I use my digital to play properly and my physical to hack)

I prefer the hard copies as well, I'd be worried about messing up my SD card if I used digital versions. I can also buy the other physical copy without my parents knowing; I doubt they'd be very impressed if they found out I had two copies of a game x'D Not being able to swap stuff between my two towns will be a little irritating, but hopefully one of my friends will help me x'3 Thanks for your help!

I guess, although I was thinking of making this second one a cycle town :) I'm too scared to try hacking, it looks amazing but knowing me I'd find some way of totally destroying my game.

It's almost impossible to brick your game using the method I'm using.

It works by dumping and injecting different profiles into your game, so as long as you have a back-up of your town stored you can't really go wrong. Anyway, I shouldn't have mentioned hacking, as it's against the rules to discuss it :)

I have been seeing a lot of it on tumblr, I have got tutorial links and things saved in case I want to try in future but I definitely don't want to risk my current town. Ah well, at least you didn't mention anything too bad like methods or links :)

I have 3 physical copies, and the biggest advice I can give you is do NOT mess with the 3ds clock. If you need to plot reset use the time travel to 5:55 AM and wait 5 minutes to create a New Save File method instead.

That isn't a problem as I don't time travel or plot reset, and I only change the clock when the clocks go forward/back :) Thank you for the advice though! I'll bear that in mind if I do ever decide to plot reset in the future!

I have a digital copy and a psychical copy. The digital copy would be super convenient cause then I could just load up my town whenever I wanted, but I'm gonna end up using it as a cycling town. In which case, it's also convenient because it's right there and I can just cycle people out whenever. But I'm not crazy about cycling so...

I suppose either way would work really, although the problem with a digital copy with me is that I'd have to ask my parents to put funds in my eShop, and they definitely wouldn't as they'd say another copy was a waste of money. I know a local shop near my house sells 3DS games and the last time I was in there they had NL for a fairly good price, so I'll probably get a second physical one :) thanks for your help!

I have two physical copies of animal crossing new leaf. I usually only use my main town for playing every day howevwer i occasionally play a second cartridge copy on the same console. Seems to work fine :)

I have a physical and digital copy on the same system. I like the game enough, so figured why not. I may look into hiring someone to hold some items to swap between the two towns at some point (non-orderables), but other than that, nothing I really had to worry about/do differently.

Streetpass will be messed up, but if you don't use the feature, then using two copies on one system is perfectly safe.

What I mean by this: You can only get Streetpass on one copy of the game, Streetpass may disable itself occasionally, and something else I cannot think of at this time...

That's fine, I rarely use Streetpass anyway. Is Spotpass and downloading items affected though?

The only thing that I've noticed is that I typically don't get the letters from Nintendo on my digital town. I haven't actually tried getting any Nintendo Zone items with both towns lately, but I've recently only been receiving the Nintendo Zone item update letters in the town on my physical copy of the game.

No problems with getting DLC items like the zodiac set from the Post Office on both towns.

That isn't too bad, I rarely get those. I haven't yet visited either of my local Nintendo Zones (on the account I've only just discovered them xD) but if the post office DLCs are working then those should work as well. My friend and I are going out tomorrow so I'm going to see how much another physical copy will be in the shops around her house. Thanks for your help! ^^
