I know not everyone celebrates Christmas but don't you think since it is the North America version of ACNL, don't you think it should say "Christmas Eve" instead of "Toy Day" that makes it sound like Christmas is all about toys which it's NOT. Anyone else agree?

Nope!

Well, Animal Crossing was developed in Japan. Christmas in Japan isn't about toys either, it's about couples. I think the fact that the developers decided on Toy Day was to acknowledge those who don't celebrate Christmas, so that those people could enjoy participating in just another in-game event of many. Does it also bother you that Thanksgiving isn't called Thanksgiving, and is instead referred to as the Harvest Festival?

Well, no. It might be called Toy Day, but its definitely not just about toys. You spend the whole event giving out presents to your beloved villagers in exchange for nothing, really. Its all about giving and not receiving!

nah.
besides that, villagers don't even ask for toys. so I don't think it makes the holiday sound like it's all about toys. I wouldn't want it to be called Christmas, but I kinda wish it had a different name than Toy Day. but Toy Day is a perfect name for the holiday in AC, imo.

To a small child, Toy Day aptly describes the holiday. Not everyone buys the nonsense of some ludicrous mythological deity.

honestly I wish it said "Christmas" because well, that's what it is. but I'm sure the developers had a good reason for it, maybe not wanting to offend anyone. and true its not all about toys.

Not everyone in North America celebrates Christmas.

True, but not everyone celebrates Halloween, yet there is is in-game, called Halloween even IIRC.

I'm not really bothered by this myself, though. After Wild World's baseless removal of holidays, I'm just happy to have them even if they're called something else. (I say baseless because if it was really about what they said, it doesn't explain why the game still had Christmas objects like the Festive Trees. Just doesn't make any sense).

To be fair, Halloween for many is exactly like is in-game: giving out treats and playing tricks. I don't think I've met anyone who did things differently. I also know a lot of people that prefer the term Festive or Holiday tree as opposed to Christmas. I came to the conclusion that Toy Day was meant to accommodate both those who do not celebrate Christmas as well as those who do, but not for religious reasons.

I'm perfectly fine about it being just Toy Day.
After all, like everyone said, not everyone celebrate Christmas.

And it's a game about funny animals, so Toy Day is more suitable.

I take it as the Animal Crossingized version of Christmas. I think it is cool they even included a holiday on Christmas's date cause in Wild World they didn't and I was disappointed as a kid.

Halloween isn't a religious holiday with different religions celebrating different holidays. That's why all the religious holidays like Easter, Christmas, and Thanksgiving are renamed and focus on eggs, Santa Claus, and food respectively instead of religion, but Halloween, New Years, and April Fools Day are called by their real names since they are not religious based holidays.

Nah~ I kinda like it when they give game holidays cute little names like this. While the aspects of toy day are very Christmas-y the celebration is pretty similar to other holidays that take place around the same time. A great deal of winter festivals revolve more around prayer and feasts than gift-giving, however, gift-giving is indeed a part of multiple December celebrations. It is also important to remember that Christianity has been such a prominent religion to the point where it has effected the celebrations of other holidays without affecting what they originally represented.

While I generally prefer a holiday-like adaptation in my games, I can understand why some people would prefer that it be called Christmas, especially since the holiday in Japan is still referred to as Christmas, despite it having very little/ nothing to do with religious celebration there. As someone who has celebrated the Summer and Winter Solstice since being very little, I was EXTREMELY happy to see that there was a Solstice celebration in New Leaf, but I also wouldn't particularly be upset if they were to keep the concept of the celebration while changing the name. The same would go for Halloween, if they were to re-name that.

It's a touchy subject for a lot of people on both sides of the discussion. Since miscommunication is even more common through text (especially over social media) it's often not a good idea to try to discuss these things online.

Why would you make a thread like this? Obviously it's gonna get hate. I agree that Christmas is not just about toys, but...come on people. All you're gonna get from this is negative attention.

Christmas is a religious holiday and they wanted to leave religion out of it so everyone could enjoy the day lol why is that so hard to consider??
