Does Anyone Else Have Trouble Catching Abalone?

For the past hour I've been swimming around the ocean of my village. Of all the medium sized shadows none of them are abalone. There is ONE medium sized shadow however, that, no matter how close I get to it...it IMMEDIATELY vanishes.

If I successfully grab it, it STILL vanishes....I'm guessing this is abalone I'm trying to nab for my museum. Does anyone else have this problem?

My one that either I couldn't catch or it just never showed up was the ear shell. And I only just caught a squid for the first time after having my town for nine months.

Other than that it seems like you were diving at the right time frame since abalones are out from 4pm to 9am. It may just be game mechanics. Also it will vanish if it's close to shore or near Kapp'ns boat.
