Do you Play as Yourself, or a Made up Character?

I always find it funny when people say that they can't relate to characters as well unless they are playing themselves. This isn't a problem when we watch movies, or read books, but somehow in videogames it's a problem? Makes no sense to me.

I just picked a name I thought sounded pretty "Anabelle" and I chose her to play c:
I never play as myself.. kind of takes the fun out of games but that's my opinion!

I play as myself, she may not look like me but Its supposed to be!!! It just makes me feel more involved in the game and more interested on my villagers lol

I've always played as myself in every game ever. The thought of playing as someone else never crossed my mind.

I play as myself, although it doesn't really make that much of a difference to me if I play as myself or as a made-up character. I do have side characters, too, but I never really play as them.

Playing as my O.C. I've always wanted to see her as mayor. :)

Made her interests and some personality based off from me.

Putting myself in the game makes me feel uncomfortable for some reason. :p

I play as myself.

While resetting yesterday I tried creating different characters: I tried characters I've been writing about for years, as well as more recent ones, and nothing worked. (I think this is the part where I mention I'm a published fic + non-fic writer as well as an aspiring screenwriter/film director? Hi!) Nothing felt as right as calling my character 'Tina'. The weird thing is, I didn't even start going by the name 'Tina' in RL until I was 18. Even my legal name doesn't feel as natural as 'Tina'. :p

I play as myself as I do in all games. I find it interesting that people make up other characters. It would be cool to play as the opposite gender but I don't think I'd feel as attached to the game as I do now if that makes sense?

My name's Kimiko, which is what I named my chara, but I dress her up as a chef though I want to be a nurse, (too stupid with mediocre grades to be a doctor), so I feel a certain heir of detachment as I call her my character.

Another random question, but recently ive seen that many people do not actually play as themselves in their town, they have made up characters with backstories and everything, which i've never understood why :p but some people actually make it look pretty good..

Personally i play as myself, i cant imagine a made up character, as i wouldnt feel the closeness to the villagers

So what about you guys?
Great thread! Same here. So much time and creativity goes into this game so I couldn't imagine playing anyone else but a miniature (and younger) version of me.

A made up character :) I wouldn't want to play as myself for some reason, I feel happier playing as a made up character!

But its not about relating to a character, in animal crossing it is a virtual simulated game, where you are playing as a person, which is why it makes more sense to be yourself for some people
In a book or a movie, you have that detachment, as the character is definitely not you.
I don't read a book and pretend thats me through the story,i can relate but i dont envision that as myself, same in a film
I didn't clarify that well but still

I play as myself just with a different hair color, although I did have blonde for a while before going pink :P My eyes were actually brown when I first started playing and I couldn't bear to part with them since my eyes are brown in real life :) I used to play as a made-up character in WW named Alice but I couldn't enjoy the game as much if it wasn't me.
