I have very little bushes, but I did mix the holly and sweet olive together, making a little row. I don't think my layout is best for bushes much anyways.
Most of the time I keep the same types of bushes together but I'm currently redoing parts of my town and I'm trying to use different bushes to give it a different look. So far I like it!
- Pink hydrangeas and white azaleas
- Blue hydrangeas and pink azaleas
- either hydrangeas with Holly bushes
- any hydrangeas with red hibiscus
- sweet olive with yellow hibiscus
I enjoy planting different combinations and watching them bloom!
In my main town I use the same kind of bushes for specific areas. In my second town I'm going to mix it up a bit, but I'm not sure what yet :'D it's a purple flower only town, so I was thinking of using sweet olive (the predominant bush At the moment) and yellow hibiscus.
Holly and bamboo (cut down) looks nice together, too. I have that in my second town, alternated. You could phase one out and change to sweet olive, if you were transitioning from one section to another.
Edit: Here's a blog post I made that shows what holly and cut bamboo look like together.
I don't like big lines or areas of bushes (it feels too formal for me), so I don't really have this issue. When I do have several bushes, they're usually interspersed with flowers etc., and the bushes themselves are either the same type with different color, the same type with same color, or two (but no more than two) different types.
