I looked on a wiki as I was wondering how it worked as well, and it said that it only counts for your main room. I was planning to spread it between three rooms as well, but then I saw that and honestly I don't really mind. It's only easier though; your house doesn't have to be full feng shui.
So to answer the question, it only counts for your main room (the room you first enter when you come in your house).

I can actually only find one source for it only working in the main room, there are a few others that say it works in all, although honestly no one seems to be sure. ^^;

Not at all. I just design my house the way I want it to look. If I tried to follow Feng Shui I am sure I would end up not being happy with my house.
