Personality-wise, I have 2 normals, 2 snooties, 2 peppies, 2 smugs, and 2 lazies in Canaan. I didn't mean to have a ratio like that, I just got the villagers I liked. Diamond, on the other hand, has 4 normals, 2 snooties, 2 peppies, 1 smug, and 1 lazy. There isn't really a ratio due to the insane amount of normals I have. They're just so cute though!
I personally think it's up to each player, but I don't really care for it personally. My friend wants a mostly female populated town (or so it seems that way) and I don't really think that there's anything wrong with it. (Same goes with villager personalities).
I don't care much for a gender ratio, though I could definitely use a few more girls in my town right now. I just like to have at least one of each type, for PWP purposes and to keep things fresh.
It's crossed my mind, but I think most of the villagers in the game are very unstereotyped/stereotype-transgressing/gender neutral, so I don't really care. Now, if the guys were typically macho etc., then I might want to strive for a balance or something. I do keep 1 of each personality though! For PWPs, if nothing else...
i don't pay attention to gender ratios, but i pay attention to personality type ratios. this is because then my villagers are mostly different (imagine having 10 lazy villagers- cute and hungry as heck, but all their dialog would be redundant)... i'm planning to have one of each type with only a couple repeats
