Do you have trouble with acronyms?

there's like 7 completely different archetypes in yugioh that all qualify under being labeled as a "ss" deck when played, so that's fun
My brain went to two other things... SS as in Super Sport (cars) and SS as in the most feared Nazi soldiers in WW2. I love learning history, but that is one I have never felt the need to go into.

I can understand them good enough, especially if I know the context. There's always one that I will have to look up just to be sure. There's thousands or more out there so you're bound to not know a handful of them or more. Like just recently I was reading some post somewhere about Spop and my mind went to Kpop. So...Singapore? 😅

I found out by reading more of the post and context. It's for some series called She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. You're going to come across some that will take some time to put the two together or look it up. Looking it up wasn't so easy when online wasn't so easily accessible. Also I was late to going online since my family couldn't afford things like that growing up. So when I finally tried out some online game, forget what it was common ones like lol, rofl, lmao and the such confused me until I looked it up.

Or asl, kid me thought people were being mean and calling me an a-hole. Hey asl. Woah whats with the hostility!

There are some acronyms I struggled to understand for a long time, all for stupid reasons:
  • IIRC (If I recall correctly) was confusing to me at first as “IRC” (Internet relay chat) was indeed a service I used for a semi-popular GTA San Andreas Multiplayer server I once moderated on ten years ago. For context, it allowed you to talk to players and view messages in the game without actually being in it. For a 2004 game, that was pretty advanced stuff. So, yeah, took me a while to really understand what this stood for.
  • WDYM (What do you mean) looks like an East coast call sign to my eyes. I’m a bit of a production logo nut.
  • NGL (Not gonna lie) looks like the name of some aftermarket car part company. I like racing games.
  • BFG gets confused for, well, two things. The Big Friendly Giant, and the self-explanatory weapon in Doom. Look the latter one up if you’re curious, as I can’t say it here.

Not often, at least not to the point, it bothers me. It’s sometimes kind of funny, Like “Animal Crossing-Oh-wait- he means that franchise”

Can easily tell if someone means air conditioner or a game about cute animals. I guess it’s easier with context, but sometimes you do forget more rarely used ones or ones you don’t see often because you aren’t a fan of a particular thing

I remember once someone acronymed a name of something, so I looked it up and got a school. The person meant a video game iirc

i generally do understand them but most recently, i’ve noticed people on instagram have been using the acronyms “hb” or “hg” in posts and i had no idea what that meant until someone explained it to me. apparently it means “home boy” or “home girl.”

as someone who grew up using the internet at an early age; i do understand the basic acronyms (lol, lmao, rotfl, tysm) but sometimes the internet moves too fast, even for me and i need to look up what some newer acronyms mean.

I think it should stay within casual conversation, that way you get an idea that most people within the group will already know what it means. At work it drives me a little crazy at times when I see something such as "Did you grab the FTDs for the IDHs" with no context and I'm CCd on the email... Uhhh? I'm not talking to these departments everyday, so these things can very easily lose translation, then that requires MORE emails asking for what they meant when we could've done that first lol.

I also grew up with the internet at an early age and I know basic acronyms, as well.

Sometimes, I have a little trouble understanding newer slang. (TLDR, IG, OP, SMH, etc.) I do know, but then I forget again.
