I would like first mention, that I really don't mean insult anyone, if you have full sets displayed and enjoy them, please do so with my highest compliments. :)
I'm visiting a lot of Da's lately and a lot of houses I only spend 1.7 seconds in because it's like:
"Oh, look, the gorgeous series. I wonder what's upstairs.... the princess set. fantastic."
Actually, last night I visited a da with the princess series, but it was arranged differently than 95% of princess series (bed on left front instead of center back) rooms I've seen, so it was actually nice.
The Da's I've been going through are either random or from Uni's 'best non-hacked Da' thread, and some of the truly impressive houses, have normal, not necessarily matching, stuff, customized and arranged it a really cool way.
I think the two I was really impressed with was Elm Isle and Himakari (don't remember, close enough)
I think the sets can be used in really impressive ways, new arrangements and include some pieces from another set that are customized; like the mermaid set with white custom ranch pieces and some custom natural pieces. Very nice.
And plants, plants are good.
I have half the natural series in Cascades, most of the green series in Chapman and the modern wood series in Redbow, so I like sets, just not the same ones over and over.
It's probably just me and I get tired of sameness.

Last year, when I visited DA's, a lot of them, as you said, had the princess set, sweets set, gorgeous set, or something, and when other's had a mix of sets, or had their homes set up differently, it definitely was refreshing.

I used to always set up the classic set, and the regal, but I realised I needed to change it up (as HHA points aren't a huge priority at the moment, so now I've mixed sets to have different couches from different sets – I'm just having fun mixing sets together (like modern wood & sleek or regal couches & sleek furniture, or minimalist with any)

[tl;dr: I do like keeping full sets from time to time but for now, mixing furniture sets is what seems most fun :3 ]

I don't have full sets either, 1) because I haven't been able to finish collecting them and 2) because I like to mix and match because I did begin to get bored with only one set per room. And some of my favorite pieces don't belong to the furniture series anyway. Now I would only have full sets if I was trying for the HHA points.

my mayor's house is a combination of the full cabin set and parts of modern wood, blue and green! i'm not a huge fan of the matchy pastel stuff tbh

I used to do this, because I'm not that creative when it comes to interior design lol. I've always struggled decorating my houses, and putting sets down is just easiest for me. But right now all of my houses are empty, because I'm trying to focus on landscaping my town.

I actually don't have any furniture sets in my houses. My houses consist of a theme, not a style. So really no beds or furniture sets; just furniture that goes along with the theme. Because of that they don't look like regular houses with furniture sets, beds, bathrooms, kitchens, or living rooms. Just a lot of gyroids or musical instruments in my houses in Serenade for the most part, but arranged in a way that makes the houses look appealing and organized and not cluttered (with the exception of a few rooms to uphold a small themed room that doesn't require a lot of space) in my opinion. And the houses in Scrolwrk are "story" houses so they don't have full furniture sets or any parts of furniture sets unless it looks good with the theme.

I've never been a fan of simply using furniture sets. While you can definitely make a room look good by using a single set, I think it's a lot more interesting to combine furniture from different sets. I haven't really started designing my current house yet, but I'm looking forward to it.

My main room has a mix of both mario and modern wood sets and a few extra stuff to make it more flashy :)

I?ve got three full sets each in their own room. The first is the main right room which has the full egg series in, along with some other cutesy items like the cutout stands and puzzle game etc. I really like the room cause it?s happy and cheerful. The second is my basement, full of spookey furniture. I know it?s easy to get hold of but I love it. I?ve also got some extra bits down there too to add to the theme, like perfect apples for toffee apples and a tarantula. My third and final themed room is my upstairs, which is jingle themed. I?m in two minds as to how much I like it or not, but it?s kinda pretty and I?ve got nothing else to go up there.

My main room is sort of themed by not fully. I love all the food type items, the citrus, melon, pear, apple etc. So I?ve got all that. Along with a random robo tv and kiddie sofa, polka dot table and Lilly record player. It?s bright and cheerful and a mash of all the stuff I love in the game.

And finally my last room is the back room. Which is completely empty other than for my massive giant teddy bear called Steve.

Most of the DAs I have visited in the last several years have displayed a more mix and match style, or the rooms are trying to accomplish a specific scene or theme, so any pieces used to accomplish that theme are used. I definitely think this is the most visually interesting to visit, but I've even seen rooms that stick to one furniture set be accessorized and set up well enough to make an impact. I think mixing and matching is more popular now than it has ever been in the community, though ^_^

I used to have full sets, but it got boring. Now I mix things up. You can only look at the same furniture for so long before it gets tedious and uninspired. But however you choose to decorate, I hope everyone has fun and enjoys their beautiful homes.

Honestly I think a lot of players have gotten "better" at designing than they were at the start of the game. At least for me, I can really tell my skills have improved since 2012.

Makes me excited to see what people will do in the next game, now that we're all accustomed to PWPs.

I agree, I've thought the same! I feel like even though the community was so much more active in 2012-2014, the players who have stuck around are really dedicated, have lots of resources, and have gotten that much better at designing over the years, so the content and towns that are out there being made now are some of the best ever :)

for me, it's both; i have full sets, but i mix them in as well. i do have the full sloppy set, but i mix it in with other items i think would go good with it, and i don't use the wallpaper and flooring. my main room, a zen greenhouse, has stuff from the green series, school set, etc., so there's a lot of variation, but it still sticks to a theme and everything goes well together. i'm making my basement look like a big college dorm room, so it sticks to a theme instead of sets as well. to be honest, i think mixing sets together and doing a theme instead can make it way more interesting!

What helped me get better at decorating, or more specifically, made me want to get better at decorating, was playing Happy Home Designer and then finding that the Welcome Amiibo update in New Leaf implemented the furniture placement thingy from HHD. That made the world of difference to how I'm able to design and switch things up.

I have some full sets but now I have just got the 150,000 HHA points and the golden house, which I have never got before and really wanted, I am planning to mix things up and customise a bit more and just go for the look I want.

i have the full sets until i get my new RV cards, i was just trying to get a high score in hha c': the other house in my town is arranged however i want, usually with sloppy pieces cause theyre the most fun to play around with! im trying to make rooms that feel homey like an art studio or computer and tv room or get creative with a spooky maze room!

I have all the ice, easter, halloween and golden sets. I'm currently working on the Sanrio sets. I think i may have some other sets as well but I can't remember what they are. I don't display everything so I forget 🧐

Designing my house is one of my favourite things to do in the game so I never use full sets. I decide what sort of room I want to make and I mix and match the colours, I look through MoriDB to see all the items available and add those I want to my wishlist and look around here to buy the items, then I do my best to create the best room I can. :D
