Do you believe in fortune telling/palm reading/predicting the future?

No, and those telephone fortune telling? f that. Why do we pay 1-5 dollars so you can predict that I'll lose the remote or something,,,

I use to believe that stuff was all BS, and I do think the vast, vast majority of people out there "telling" the future are just telling you what you want to hear and milking you for money.

Having said that, I think there are a few people who are talented and seem to have an inkling for the "flow" of your life. I have never had direct experience, only with my female relatives going to get readings. Now, they are all Asian, so what they are doing is the Chinese astrology. If you go to a good one, they will not sugar coat stuff, they are pretty brutal and honest.

For example, when my grandmother got a reading for one of her sons when he was A baby she was told out flat that he did not see my uncle living past age 20 and sure enough, he died before 20. She got another reading done at a different point in her life and she was told she would spend a lot of time as a widow and my grandpa did die very young.

My aunt went in while I was engaged (for the first time) and she was told it was a bad match. It stressed her out, because she didnt want to tell me or my mom because, well, then she would be responsible for the breakup of an engagement, right? The astrologer told her, dont worry, that relationship will just unravel itself, there is no way that engagement will end in marriage, and sure enough thats what happened. The astrologer told her that I would meet my husband in my early thirties and marry at age 35, which happened. I did not find this out until I had been married for several years. The astrologer also accurately predicted where my husband was born, which was freaky, since he was in Asia, and my husband was born in a very obscure town in New York.

So yeah, the scientific part of my brain always doubts, but there have been a lot of times when these type of readings are sort of accurate, so personally, i cant dismiss it. Although, having said all that, i do not believe in western astrology. Its always positive, always sunny. No one ever says, hey you, you are going to die of cancer within the next 10 years. While those scary ass Asian astrologers will. :(

No, I don't believe in it and have never sought out any palm reading or fortune telling. The readings that people are given seem to be so ambiguous that they can applied to so many situations that are bound to happen in life anyway.

Not at all, I am way too down to Earth n_n But I think there's a mystic, mysterious aspect about fortune/plam reading/predicting the future that I find quite fascinating and very inspiring for fictions!

My Dad's girlfriend claims to be psychic. She made some awful predictions/intuitive sensations about me and my life. Like how she is in touch with the dead and how my mother's death was an elaborate suicide because she had a near-death experience in her life and wanted to be "pain-free" again. WHAT AN AWFUL THING TO SAY! It disturbed me for weeks. I don't believe in any of it. I am a psychology major. We don't believe in psuedoscience like psychics. But she legitimately believes that she is psychic! She knows people out their are hoaxes and fakers but she legitimately elieves she has some sort of "gift". That doesn't stop her from getting paid TONS OF MONEY for readings though. Like $60 a session. She also does workshops on angels and horoscopes and all sorts of things. I sometimes test her and see what she says on things like myhoroscope (I am a Libra) and she will use very generalized umbrella terms and use information she already knows about me to apply to her "reading of me", like "your lesson in life is that you are the scales, so you have to learn to balance your emotional self with your intellectual self". But I was under the impression that Libras were naturally good at that BECAUSE they were the scales - it just so happens she knows I have trouble balancing those areas of my life and horoscopes don't apply to me so she modified it for my reading. So its BS!

I don't believe in it but i'm still too scared to get my palm read, fortune told, etc just incase they say something horrible/terrifying D:

It's difficult for me to explain (and no, I'm not superstitious or anything), but I think it's dangerous stuff to be messing with. Someone I know told me about her friend who called her up saying she was going to meet a fortune teller for fun. She did it and she was told that her husband was cheating on her, and after that a bunch of freaky stuff started happening in her house.

Not to mention the fact that once you're told it, you slowly start to believe it. In some cases it can really mess with your mind.

That's what I'm worried about. I'm really curious and I want to see what will be said. But if it's something negative, I know with how my brain is that I'll start to convince myself that it's true.

Absolute bull. You can't predict the future based on some sort of magic or spiritual properties. What these 'fortune tellers' are very good at is being able to read people, nothing more, nothing less. There are classes in college you can take that teach you how to do that. The only difference is, gullible people pay them money to do it. It's all about going off of facial cues (someone's expression, twitches of facial muscles), as well as starting with very general statements that could apply to a mass of people, and narrowing down the results. You'd be surprised at how much you give away with your face and responses. They are indeed con-artists, but they're providing a service to people who are looking for answers. They just happen to be answers that aren't really useful.

EDIT: Going to agree with above statements as well- positive affirmations can help you believe in anything. People don't need to pay fortune tellers to tell them good things will happen to them, they just need to believe in it themselves.

To a degree. I believe that some have psychic powers such as channeling, predicting the future, etc., but I also believe there are a lot more fakes than genuine psychics. This is because I know a lot about psychology and I know that a lot of people use it to exploit the gullible, but I also understand that there are people who that don't. Like I do dream interpretations and using what knowledge I have about psychology, symbology, etc., I can correctly psychoanalyze strangers on the internet, decipher their dreams most likely meaning, and accurately guess what they were thinking about right before they went to bed (however, this is only true if I am given all the facts about the dream). And dream interpretation is a form of fortune telling and I know it works, so yeah and before anyone says anything like, "Well, why don't you just call it a psychological analyzation instead of fortune telling?", it's because fortune telling or dream interpretation sounds a lot less invasive.

She sounds kind of....*insert not nice term here* I'm sorry, but picking out people's flaws is only good if you're giving constructive criticism, and careful criticism at that. She sounds like...she wants money.

You know, I'd be glad to test this out. If you guys have questions, I can ask my deck of tarot cards and see what they say

It could be a scientific study to see if the cards really work. Because I'm sort of in the middle of believing or not anyway. And I promise I won't like...charge anyone. I'll just do some readings.

No, I've never had my palm read. I personally think it's just a person being able to read and then feed on your emotions.

But predicting the future... I'm of the belief that knowing your natal chart is helpful, if you want it to be helpful. It's not telling you what's going to happen; it's saying something along the lines of, (and I'm using a metaphoric example) "it looks like it might be rainy - perhaps it'd be good to wear a raincoat."

I believe that there are gifted people out there who can do things like that, but unfortunately, there are many scammers out there trying to make a quick buck. I never tried a reading before, not that I don't believe, but I'm afraid the person is a fake. I don't want vague answers, I expect concrete facts and details.

I don't think palm readers or other fortune tellers are able to predict the future. When they do, it's just a coincidence. If they were able to predict the future so well, I think they could have warned us from a lot of past events.

I do believe (or know?) it's possible to see the future, but it can't be forced to my knowledge. And even then it might just be mundane events rather than seeing 9/11 is going to happen.

Apart from that manner, I think that it's easily possible to predict how the geopolitical environment will change based on certain events. That's simply a matter of analysis though, rather than straight up guessing.

Well. In some regards I do. Mainly because my religion has strong ties to things like palmistry/divination/tarot and things like that. But it is a skill that takes years to hone and perfect.

The majority of fortune telling is just kinda relying on the fortune teller throwing out vague, generic comments and hoping that the person receiving the fortune bites. Like it's a pretty generic young adult problem to be pre-occupied by a crush/friend/college or whatever. So 9 times out of 10 a generic line like 'I can sense you are concerned by something' will work. As who isn't concerned by something?

But yeah. When someone has truly intensely studied something like tarot then it can be a powerful tool. I paid ?40 for a proper 2 hour reading by a woman whose knowledge was unmatchable. And it was just so different to how 'fake' fortune tellers do their fortunes. My friends were like 'what on earth why would you pay that much' but seriously. That woman's abilities were infallible. Some of the things she said to me were just. Actually quite tough to listen to. Halfway through the reading I had to take a break. Like it wasn't just generic stuff like 'something's gonna happen to you in a few weeks'. It was super exact with the exact timings and circumstances.

And there was no way she could've looked me up and found personal info relating to me, nor did she know anyone who was close to me. As we both belonged to the same religion we used our alternative names with each other the entire time. And even if she somehow creeped my Facebook there's honestly nothing there. And it's not like she'd know any of my friends as we'd met exclusively at a celebration.

I've always wanted to study tarot but man. It's just so much more than your expected 'you will come into money/luck/have your house invaded by rats'. A lot of it quite mentally taxing.

I mean of course they'll always be people who say it's not real and that you're kidding yourself into believing it, but seriously if you can get yourself a reading with an experienced reader then just try. You might be surprised.

I don't believe in it and agree she could see the expression on your face.

Plus a lot of people feel unappreciated, unfulfilled, etc. It's an easy bet to start there.
