This is definitely a common occurrence. Pretty/special gimmicks do seem to attract fans. But we have to keep in mind that villagers like Fauna, Lolly, and Molly are all popular despite looking plain and natural.

In a world where a mouse can be purple or a frog a robot, being plain and normal is a gimmick. Natural colors also attract a lot of people like Whitney/Fang/Chief.
