My sister was TTing to get her first campsite villager in and then came down victorious, squealing about how cute he was - "he" being Zell.
I've told her numerous times to except to fall in love with villagers who may not look the best - my experience with Cyrano, Cole, Canberra, Stinky, and Olaf. She ignored me. She has the whole "if they're not cute, then I hate them" mindset. Of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinions, and I understand that some people have pastel/dark themed islands and are specifically seeking out villagers whose houses and appearances meet that criteria. I don't discriminate against looks as much - the only really "ugly" one I had a grudge against was Beardo, mainly because of his personality. My sister's all excited about the cuteness of Zell, but she's going to be in for a shock - smug villagers are very arrogant and boastful, they don't really have "cute" personalities 😅

But wouldn’t Olaf be acting the same as Zell since they’re both smug? I’d say if you’re gonna let someone act arrogant to you, might as well be someone cool like Zell.Lol

But seriously, after I got my dream villagers, I now feel more open to inviting unpopular villagers like Rodney or Beardo. I think it keeps things interesting.

I disagree about smug villagers having bad personalities (which it sounds is your big issue with Zell, lol) Yes, they're boastful... but they also don't put other villagers or the character down that I can think of. If anything, they're adorably clueless. In previous games snooty, cranky, and even smug to a degree in NL could be pretty rude... but in this game, I feel like everyone's a lot nicer. Yes, smug villagers think they're amazing. But they also don't seem to boost themselves up much by putting others down. If anything, I get a lot of compliments from mine! And it's cute when they stop you and ask you to proof-read their autobiography, or talk about what the t-shirts made in honor of them will say.
...Now that I think about it, they're A LOT like peppies 😝

I guess what I mean is she was all "omg, he's so cute, just look at him!" Behind that cute exterior is a very self-assured deer 😂

Haha sorry, didn't really clarify - it wasn't Beardo's smug personality, it was the things he did - he was always walking besides my younger female villagers and staring them down 🤮 plus, putting hair THERE was just a creepy design choice

Idk... I really love cute characters but they all kinda grow on me after interacting with them for a little bit

Looks are very important to me. If they're ugly, it's an automatic no. They have to be really cute for me.
Some villagers I liked in Wild World look weird in this game. Kiki's lips are a glowing bright red colour and it's just too weird for me and Static looks off in this game so I didn't get either of those two.

in my exp villagers in ACNH aren't really "smug" or "snooty" they've toned down the dialogue a ton compared to previous installments

to me its just outward appearance that matters, since all the personalities have similar dialogue sets

Everyone have their own preferences, I guess. I actually dislike some villagers who are considered to be "cute" by the community and I find some "ugly" villagers interesting in terms of design or possible inspiration behind their look.

I feel like Zell exudes enough “smug” despite the cuteness like Marshal does 🤣

I will say that exterior appearances matter to me but opinions of what’s cute varies with each person that I think most villagers are considered “cute” by someone (I hope!) I personally find Biff kinda cute with his Rock Lee eyebrows but I’m sure many might think he’s not

At first I might hesitate, but I always keep an open mind. There's designs like Stinky's which at first I didn't want to touch with a ten foot pole when he visited my campsite, but I'm all for trying out villagers most would overlook, and I have started to like him a lot more than I thought I would since having him. I even appreciate his design as well. He doesn't actually wear underwear on his head and he wears a wrestling champion's belt underneath his clothing 24/7. I even find him pretty cute even at this point.

At the risk of sounding shallow, yes, their appearances matter. When we have limited personalities and dialogue, and when you have about 30+ different animals who are all exactly the same except for their outer appearance, of course it matters in a way. If I get a villager that I don't like the appearance of on my island I don't freak out or get mad but I do get excited when I find one that I feel is super cute and I will try to move the one that I do not like off of my island. If every single villager had their own personality, it would be different for me. Then they'd be actual individuals just like in real life, but they aren't that different in this game. Even though I really liked Henry, I like Marshal more because of his appearance, and they have the exact same personality and dialogue, so it didn't matter to me because I didn't have a special attachment to Henry. I can form attachments to certain villagers such as Cleo because I grew up with that villager, but the rest are all just appearances really.

I care about looks. There are villagers I like that may look plain or ugly to people but I still like them for their looks to an extent. There really isn't much to differentiate villagers of the same personality otherwise. There are other factors that make me like/dislike them, though.

As for smugs, I don't mind their personality and in some cases it's just funny.

I seem to find ugly villagers very cute =( but it usually depends from design to design, well designed villagers that fit their personality, I find much cuter than others!

like an example: I find Deirdre to be very ugly/weird.. the colors and white lips freak me out! but I find those like Vladimir or Barold to be super cute!

The fact that you've grown to like Cyrano and Olaf makes me happy. I wouldn't say they're cute, but for anteaters, I do like them. Especially Olaf, because he and I have the same birthday. I think people should give "ugly" villagers a chance. I wasn't really fond of Al the gorilla at first. But he ended up being one of my favorites. Beardo isn't all that appealing to look at, but my best friend wants him because of how he looks. I guess that's still judging a character based on how they look like your sister thinks of Zell and only wanting cute villagers. But sometimes certain villagers fit whatever you're going for. Back in New Leaf I wanted Limberg in my town. Mice villagers aren't appealing to most, and Limberg, well, he's at the bottom of the barrel when it comes to looks. But I didn't care. He was a villager I intended to have, even though it never happened.

People think differently, though. It's nice to have popular villagers or even cute villagers. I find an island a tad more charming when I see a villager I've never seen. Also, quite recently I wanted Biff or Rudy when Mott moved out because I needed a jock. I really thought about getting Rudy because I just think he's really cute, but I went with Biff for nostalgic reasons. Most people wouldn't think so, but I also think Biff is a cute villager. 😊

I think the appearance does matter, but people’s definitions of what is cute are different and also changeable.

I think a lot of people mistake liking less popular villagers with not caring about appearance.

For example I love Cole, he’s totally adorable to me, I find him much much cuter than Sherb (who happened to show up at my campsite the same day Cole moved in, funny enough)

I love Tabby too, and I find her cuter than other villagers. In my head I know people find her ugly, but I look at her and she is pure adorable.

And yet I think to myself - Do people really find the wolves cute? I can see Skye...I guess.

Then again, there’s also people who have different looks they like than cute - interesting, cool, weird, unique, etc.

But...even in instances where you just have an interaction with a villager that strikes a chord with you for whatever reason, which does happen, even if the villagers are all pretty much the same technically, I think you also grow to like their look.

For a variety of reasons I grew to really really love Bangle, and my opinion of how cute she is also went up accordingly.

Likewise, how cute you think a villager is does change your experience with them. Lionel, my first camper was find, at times I did find him pretty cute. But I found the smug personality mostly weird, and a little creepy, and too flirty. Now I have Graham, and I know, I know he is the same type as Lionel, but he is just an adorable little baby in my eyes and he comes across as so sweet and not flirty at all.

Both Cyrano and Olaf have a special place in my heart! Cyrano came from a friend of mine who was mistreating him (ignoring him, not giving him medicine when he was sick) in the hopes he'd move out. I insisted on taking him and paid 170k Bells (because my friend is also money hungry). As for Olaf, he is another one who I actively sought out! I have a soft spot for the anteaters

That makes me sad to read that about Cyrano. I'm glad you took him in. I had recently found out about him from a friend who has a few anteaters on her island, who also loves anteaters. I wonder just how popular anteaters are now since you also like them.

Yes appearance matter to me. With only six personality types and those personality types each having set dialogue their only difference is looks. I personally don't care which hobby they have so yeah looks is what I care about. If the villagers where written like characters found in books and tv shows then I could look pass their appearances but since they aren't looks matter. Villagers are like donuts with color frosting. They are the same flavor donut with the same flavor frosting I just pick the blue compared to the yellow one because blue is my favorite color.

Plus with recent games they toned down the rudeness so Smugs aren't even that anymore. The words cute/ugly is based on opinion anyways. I find Twiggy down right adorable but my mom thinks she looks plain aggressive lol. What other people want/like in their villagers shouldn't matter. As very ones opinion is different. Trying to make someone change theirs based on something such as villager looks just makes them plant themselves deeper in ground.
