Do villagers actually catch fish?

I see them fishing every now and again, it's quite cute. But do they ever get the animation of actually catching one? Also, have you ever seen them throw the bobber in? I've seen them standing by water for AGES, walked away and gone back to see them fishing. Does it only happen off screen? Would be cute if we could actually see them doing these animations.

I've never seen them throw the bobber in. Usually when I go to Main Street and come back I see them fishing.. it'd be cute to see those animations. x3

The only time I've ever seen them trying to catch bugs is on the tourney. Do they do it on general days too? I like seeing them shake trees and do the sad animation because nothing falls out. Don't really understand the thinking one though as it's not like they ever pick anything up.

I feel like such a jerk when I stand next to them and catch the fish, but they usually clap so I guess it's all right.

Yeah I saw them chasing after bugs outside the tourney as well, sometimes even without a net! That was Chrissy (peppy) who did that! That was so cute.

I've seen them actually stalking bugs on regular days with their nets out, so they do bug hunt on regular days, too But they never actually try to catch the bug they're stalking, they just "stop" and keep looking. LOL

Well...lol...it sure feels like they MUST catch fish when I spent several hours at the last tourney fishing for Crucian Carp and Pietro beat me out in the finals!!! Well, at least later he told me he had just gotten lucky and not to feel down about it.

Poor villagers will always throw their little fishing rods with bait in, but to no avail, for they shall never catch fish. It must be why they ask you to get them bugs and fish all the time.
