do the NH aesthetics compare with the NL ones?

For me, I preferred some of the flowers and the colour of the grass in NL. I liked the glossy look of grass as you walked south and there would be a lighter sheen in the north, and the roses/tulips in NL I liked more just because they were bunched in 4s and looked cuter (the lilies looked awful though lol). Other than those two things NH is graphically so much more gorgeous than NL, and the detail is amazing.

I don't think you can compare the games. The difference is just too big. Graphically, NH is so much better too.

I still don't know what cottagecore is. I have seen it mentioned a few times and google isn't helping.

Honestly, after playing NH for over 2 months, I don't see myself ever going back to NL.
I'm a visual person and an artist so graphics matter to me BIG time.
Having said that, some of the NL photos posted on Tumblr and such looked great... but mostly due to the heavy filtering/smoothening of the textures and appropriate types of lighting added.
Don't get me wrong - NL was and probably still is one of favorite games but NH just looks SO MUCH better.

I'm guessing you're talking about aesthetics that are popular/trendy, not actual graphics since obviously acnh is miles ahead of acnl in that department. I think acnh definitely gives me a diff feeling than acnl did... I know the type of towns you're talking about and I had a pink town, and then a stormy summer town, but that's also partially bc there were so many more limitations in acnl than in acnh (only so many PWPs to choose from).

I think acnh there's so much more variety, but I can def see new trends. Cluttered towns, modern cities, japan inspired towns, and towns with mainly white flowers/cottagecore seem to be pretty popular on social media atm. I think this is also because of new limitations on furniture lol... everythings quite... normal? not sure if that's the right word for it.

But I really miss the more unique stuff from acnl, esp since some items have been around since the first game so I'm not sure why they got rid of them. Like there's so many more japan inspired items (which I love), but I don't want my entire town to be japan themed you know?

Like I made this room in acnl and almost half of the furniture here is unavailable in acnh, which is kinda sad.. I also feel like I can't make anything as creative in acnh because of the lack of more out there items :(

The graphics in new horizons are better . However the furniture in new leaf was more my style. There where more creepy spooky furniture than now. It’s harder In new horizons to make my town how I had it in new leaf. Also they took out dead trees :(

That's true. I have been thinking of having a part of my island dedicated to creepy horror stuff because of i'm a big horror movie buff but I have a feeling we will be getting lots of spooky stuff during the Halloween update and some of the old furniture sets will be back eventually.

Yeah that’s what I’m really hoping for! The wait for Halloween feels like an eternity though 😬

Graphically, ACNH is miles ahead of ACNL, just because we're looking at updated rendering techniques and a bunch of other technical stuff I don't have the vocabulary for. Aesthetically, whether ACNH or ACNL is better is all personal preference. The big trends of ACNL were overtly fantasy-like: pink towns, pastel towns, fairytale stuff and lots of sweets and cartoon-scaled props. ACNH's biggest trends skew just a little more toward realism: suburban towns, mostly Japan-inspired, and the various iterations of "cottagecore," an idealized form of rustic minimalism that, although influenced by whimsical sources like Ghibli films and shows like "Over the Garden Wall," tends to come across as a little self-serious.

In both ACNH trends, the palettes are subdued and there is an emphasis on very small details and textures in the environment. And even though we can easily identify these different trends in both games, that doesn't mean all players are adhering to any of them! So there is no way to really say "x is better than y" or whatever. But we can (and definitely should!) compare the aesthetic trends between the games and draw conclusions about what the comparisons "say" about the players and the historical and cultural contexts that the games emerged from. Well, I like to do that anyway. It's a fun way to understand the times we live in.
this is what i was trying to get to! the fairy tale feel versus the ordinairy/ realism feel! acww was my first game but to me nl feels so magical aah
also im not referring really to graphics as i have a set of eyes and can tell nh is miles ahead of nl hehe

I can’t compare it to NL, because NH’s graphics are a big step up and the detail which makes it different to NL in my opinion.
