Do fossils still spawn on days you haven't played the game?

I was wondering, you know how 3 fossils spawn a day? Well do they spawn on days that you haven't played? And is there a limit of how many can be in your town at once before they stop spawning?

There will be a maximum of 4 regardless of whether or not you play. They will not keep building. Just like 1 Pitfall.
