I didn't get a farewell from one of my villagers who just moved off my island, as I was expecting since animals typically did that in past AC games. Do the animals not do that anymore?

Hm I've only had one move away and I can't recall getting a letter (if I was on the game I'd double check). I did kick her out with an amiibo and speak to her before she left so maybe that affected it? If it happens regardless, it could be they removed that feature because villagers don't move out without speaking to you first right thus they always say their farewells in person.

Sprinkles moved out because Stitches randomly camped and chose to replace her. She didn’t write me a letter but the night before she went away she said goodbye and that the world is a small place and she hopes to see me again somewhere sometime. That’s pretty much it.

Ahh okay. So I guess they took out farewell letters in this game. Shoot, that's a little sad because I kind of like holding onto farewell letters as a last piece to remember my old villagers by...

IKR. I've cycled thru a lot of villigers. .no letters. even when the originals moved away who I had high friendship with.
What I do is keep their posters now in the nook app

Someone here said when they left they got their pic in the mail in a goodbye letter.

Oh okay, so there is hope that they're still in the game! Hopefully I'll get to that point if any of my villagers leave and I've become good enough friends with them to see for sure.
I never received a letter from Curlos when he moved out, but then again I made a point of not really speaking to him too much because I knew I wanted him out eventually. I hope that the villagers you talk to a lot would send letters, I used to always love receiving them!
I think like a bunch of stuff, sending/receiving letters to/from villagers is a thing of the past, you don't even get the usual speech on making sure it's not offensive and villagers don't encourage you to send them letters...
We have message bottles back but all they do is give you recipes, my kingdom to be able to write my own and release them...we're the most connected to the internet we've ever been and this feature is missing, ahhh. I wanna write ridiculous three line stories and share them with the world!

it is? i actually get a lot of letters from my villagers despite never sending any out myself - as in, basically every other day for a week straight now!
it's not a thing, it seems. if you "bff" certain villagers, they start sending you letters and sometimes letters with related gifts to the content of what they've written, but i've had a few villagers move out who i've had bff'ed and there was just ... nothing. so much for your friendship, bianca.
though, i think it's quite unneccessary to have them if the villagers can't even move without your approval anymore? those letters kind of served like a reminder/notice that they'd left in the last games, so why sent them now if you are very aware of the happenings anyway?

I just mean in terms of core focus (not that it's actually removed), it's an older aspect of the games that isn't given as much attention now - like I said you don't even get the old lecture on not being offensive in the letters from any of the villagers, and there's not really an incentive now (it doesn't appear to impact your "friendship" with them - as you say, you've been getting them loads without even sending them anything).

thats fair, guess i misunderstood the point you were making! it does seem slightly random - it does seem to come solely and specifically from the villagers im closest to, so i think friendship is factored in somehow, but its true that its rarely prompted by anything in the way it was in the older games.

my friend has 2 villagers asked to move out since he got the game and he doesn't tt. and apple who calls me "best friend" asked to move. they will move out whether you ignore them or not. fauna also did ask me, but girl you're staying. and this is all before we had 10 villagers.
